Tutti conoscono la 24h di Le Mans, in meno sanno che la città di Le Mans ospita anche un museo, aperto tutto l’anno, dedicato alla gara di durata più famosa al mondo. Se state pensando al solito noioso museo, non potreste essere più lontani dalla realtà.
Everyone knows the Le Mans 24h, less people know that the town of Le Mans hosts a museum too, open all year, dedicated to the most famous endurance race in the world. If you are thinking about the usual, boring museum, you could not be more wrong.
Stilare un elenco completo di tutto ciò che potete trovare all’interno sarebbe lungo ed esulerebbe dallo scopo di questo breve articolo, perciò lasciate che vi dia una panoramica di quanto questo spazio ha da offrire. Qui potete accarezzare una stupenda Porsche 917 LH in livrea Martini e subito dopo passare alla Lagonda M45 Rapide vincitrice dell’edizione del 1935. Ci sono davvero auto per tutti i gusti. Siete fan Audi? Qui ce ne sono tre: la R8 FSI che vinse nel 2002, la R10 TDI a gasolio che vinse nel 2008 e la R18H che si aggiudicò la edizione 2013. Preferite le auto più classiche? Ferrari 166MM del ’49, Lotus XI Le Mans del ’56 e tante altre ancora. Potete eseguire la visita secondo l’ordine consigliato, partendo dal corridoio dei personaggi che hanno reso famosa la corsa per passare ai mezzi da soccorso storici, ai documenti dell’epoca e poi alle auto, oppure fare come me e perdere la bussola una volta avvistata la sagoma della Porsche 917. Alcune perle, la Mazda 787 B e la Peugeot 905, sono purtroppo delle maquette, ma le altre sono vere auto da corsa, auto che hanno lottato per 24h contro il cronometro e contro la probabilità che qualcosa, qualsiasi cosa, andasse storta. La maggior parte delle auto esposte ha trionfato sulle avversarie, altre sono state meno fortunate. La storia della Toyota 94 CV, che nel 1994 ha visto scivolare via la vittoria per un problema al cambio a fine gara, mi riporta a quanto accaduto durante l’ultima edizione della 24h. Le gare di durata sono così. Osservarla da vicino, con il profilo in carbonio abraso e con residui di sporco accanto agli scarichi, mi fa provare un senso di rispetto. Sul finire della visita ecco la bellissima Bentley Speed 8 che nel 2003 riportò sul podio il marchio inglese dopo oltre 70 anni. Bassissima, larghissima e vestita di un profondo ed elegante verde metallizzato; mi soffermo per un po’ e provo ad immaginare quelle forme sinuose fendere l’aria sul celebre rettilineo Hunaudières. Brividi. Se siete dalle parti di Le Mans al di fuori del periodo della corsa, ora sapete che non vi attende solo la fascinosa città plantageneta.

Here you can caress a stunning Porsche 917 LH in Martini livery and right after that, go to see the Lagonda M45 Rapide, winner of the 1935 edition of the race. There are cars for every tastes. Are you an Audi fan? Here there are three of them: the R8 FSI which won in 2002, the diesel powered R10 TDI which won in 2008 and the R18H which won the 2013 edition. You can do the tour by following the suggested path, starting from the corridor with the people who made this race famous to go through the historic medical and support vehicles, to the old documents and then to the race cars, or by doing like I did and lose your bearings once spotted the silhouette of the Porsche 917. Some gems, the Mazda 787B and the Peugeot 905, are sadly just maquettes, but the others are all true race cars, cars that fought for 24 hours against the clock and against the chance that something, anything, could go wrong. Most of the cars on display have won against their rivals, others have been less lucky. The story of the Toyota 94CV, that in 1994 has seen the victory fading away for a problem with the gearbox by the end of the race, brings me back to what just happened in the last 24h race. This is how endurance racing goes. To take a look at it closely, with the front carbon splitter abraded and with the traces of dirt next to the echausts, it makes me feel a sense of respect. By the end of the tour, here it is, the gorgeous Bentley Speed 8 which in 2003 brought back on the first step of the podium the british brand after more than 70 years. Very low, very wide and dressed in a deep and elegant metallic green paint; I stop there for a moment and I try to imagine those sinuous shapes cleave the air on the infamous Hunaudières straight. Goosebumps. If you are in the Le Mans area when it’s not racing time, now you know that there is not just the fascinating Plantagenet city waiting for you.
