Italian Baja 2016 – Sun, Mud, Rain, Dust

“Ah quindi andate a bere buon vino, mangiare prosciutto crudo e prendere il sole? Ma lavorare mai eh?” Si, in effetti per rispondere ai nostri cari amici, abbiamo fatto tutto quello che ci hanno detto. Però abbiamo fatto anche quello che loro non vedono e non pensano. Siamo stati per ore sotto al sole a 40°, percorrendo kilometri a piedi tra rocce, boschi e guadi. Ci siamo presi secchiate di fango, ci siamo presi la pioggia e riempiti di polvere. Ma come sempre ne è valsa la pena. La tappa italiana del FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup 2016 è stata a dir poco epica.

“So you are going to drink good wine, eat prosciutto crudo and taking the sun? You really never work, do you?” Well, yes, to answer to our good friends, we did everything they said. But we also did what they don’t see and don’t think about. We were standing under the sun at 40°, walking kilometers across rocks, woods and crossed rivers at the fords. We took buckets of mud on ourselves, we took rain and got covered in dust. But, as usual, it was worth it. The Italian round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup was absolutely epic.

Durante i tre giorni, dal 23 al 26 di Giugno, lo spettacolo è stato sempre intenso, così come la competizione tra i piloti. Quest’anno, a sfidare il qatariota Nasser Al Attiyah e la sua nuova Toyota Hilux Overdrive, è arrivato anche Menzies dagli States, in gara al volante della Mini All4 Racing. Il Venerdì si conclude con Al Attiyah davanti a tutti dopo la prima prova speciale ma nella giornata di Sabato le cose iniziano a cambiare. Il caldo torrido, il fango e l’acqua del fiume Tagliamento mettono a dura prova auto e concorrenti e il primo a farne le spese è stato proprio il leader della corsa, che a causa di un guasto tecnico ha perso parecchi minuti. Il saudita Al-Rajhi ne approfitta e conclude il Sabato in testa con la sua Mini All4 Racing.
Prima abbiamo parlato di pioggia. Bene, ecco che Domenica mattina apriamo le finestre per trovare un diluvio che andava ormai avanti da diverse ore. Passiamo dal costume da bagno al kway ma la sostanza dell’Italian Baja non cambia. Tanto gas, traversi e guida di precisione. La pioggia smette dopo poco, la campagna friulana inizia ad asciugarsi di nuovo sotto al caldo sole. Noi moriamo di caldo, di nuovo, ma una doccia di polvere e sassi fa sempre piacere. E i colpi di scena non ci sono solo per il meteo ma anche per la gara in corso. Al-Rajhi fora, Menzies passa in testa ma fora anche lui. Nasser ha la vittoria in tasca e conclude davanti a tutti, conquistando la terza vittoria consecutiva nel mondiale. A completare il podio ci sono Vladimir Vasilyev su BMW X3 e Boris Gadasin sul proto della G-Force. Solo dopo le verifiche a Gadasin vengono inflitti 30” di penalità, lasciando così il terzo posto al polacco Marek Dabrowski.
Tra le moto va a vincere Vanni Cominotto sulla Husqvarna 450, mentre nella categoria quad Amerigo Ventura agguanta il primo posto con il suo Yamaha QDY 450R. Menzione obbligatoria per quel fenomeno di Stéphane Peterhansel che si è divertito a seminare terrore con la Yamaha YXZ 1000R, piazzandosi dietro alla Suzuki Grand Vitara V6 di Codecà nel Campionato Italiano Cross Country Rally.
Il Campionato Mondiale FIA si sposta in Spagna il 22 di Luglio. Se non avete ancora prenotato le ferie… sapete cosa potete fare.

During the three days, from the 23^rd to the 26^th of June, the show has always been intense, so it was the competitions between the drivers. This year, challenging the Qatari Nasser Al Attiyah and his new Toyota Hilux Overdrive, there was even Menzies from the States, racing with the All4 Racing Mini. Friday comes to an end with Al Attiyah in front of everyone after the first special stage but on Saturday things start to change. The scorching heat, the mud and the water of the Tagliamento river put a strain on both cars and drivers and the first one to pay the consequences was the leader of the race himself, which due to a technical failure lost several minutes of precious time. The Saudi Al-Rajhi takes advantage from it and ends the Saturday on the lead with his All4 Racing Mini.
We talked about rain before. Well, Sunday morning, we open the windows to find a downpour that was going on for hours. We went from the swimsuit to the kway but the essence of the Italian Baja doesn’t change. Hard on the throttle, many slides and precision driving. The rain ends shortly after, the Friuli countryside starts to dry up again under the hot sun. We are now suffering an unbearable heat, again, but a shower of dust and gravel is always a pleasure. And the twists are not only about the weather but also for the actual race. Al-Rajhi got a puncture, Menzies goes into the lead but suffers a puncture as well. Nasser has the win in his pocket and ends the race on the first place, gaining his third win in row in the world championship. Vladimir Vasilyev on BMW X3 and Boris Gadasin on the G-Force prototype complete the podium. Only after the post-race scrutineering Gadasin has got a 30” penalty, leaving the third place to the Polish Marek Dabrowski.
Amongst the motorbikes the victory goes to Vanni Cominotto on the Husqvarna 450, while in the quad category Amerigo Ventura takes the first place with his Yamaha QDY 450R. Mandatory mention to that legend named Stéphane Peterhansel, who had some fun sowing terror with the Yamaha YXZ 1000R, ending the race behind the Suzuki Grand Vitara V6 on Codecà in the Italian Cross Country Rally Championship.
