L’odore di olio e benzina lasciato dalle auto che passano a pochi metri, spesso centimetri, dagli spettatori a bordo strada. Il sound dei rabbiosi motori preparati per i rally, il parzializzare sul gas con la punta del piede. Lo puoi quasi sentire come se fossi tu stesso alla guida. E’ una sensazione travolgente, è qualcosa di totalmente diverso dalle altre discipline del motorsport moderno. E’ il fascino di rivivere il rallysmo duro e crudo di 30 e più anni fa. E’ il Rally Revival Valpantena.

The smell of oil and petrol left by the cars passing by just a few meters, often centimeters, away from the spectators on the side of the road. The sound of the raging rally spec engines, the throttle inputs with the tip of the toe. You can almost feel it as if you were driving the car. It’s an overwhelming sensation, it’s something totally different from the other disciplines of modern motorsports. It’s the fascination of living again the tough and raw rallying of 30+ years ago. It’s the Rally Revival Valpantena.

 

Più di 230 equipaggi iscritti, auto con più di 500cv e auto con meno di 100cv, 11 prove speciali suddivise in due giorni e tanta, tanta emozione nel vivere 48h circondati dalle più grandi icone che hanno scritto pagine intere della storia dei rally.

More than 230 teams registered, cars with more than 500hp and cars with less than 100hp, 11 special stages divided among two days and many, many emotions in living 48h surrounded by the greatest icons that have written entire pages of the rally history.

 

E quando parliamo di icone non ci riferiamo solamente alle auto. Qualcuno riconosce il volto di questo signore? Qualche suggerimento per i più giovani e per i meno esperti: classe 1947, Tedesco, due campionati del mondo rally vinti rispettivamente nel 1980 e nel 1982, 14 vittorie assolute di cui 4 al leggendario “Rally di Montecarlo” e ha corso per Fiat-Abarth, Opel, Lancia e Audi. Per chi non avesse ancora capito di chi stiamo parlando, lui è la leggenda dell’automobilismo Walter Röhrl, che in questa edizione del Valpantena era al volante di una Porsche 911SC HEIGO.

And when it comes to icons we are not referring only to the cars. Does anyone recognize the face of this gentleman? Some tips for the younger  and for the less experts: born in 1947, German, two world rally championships won in 1980 and 1982, 14 overall victories 4 of which at the legendary “Montecarlo Rally” and has raced for Fiat-Abarth, Opel, Lancia and Audi. For those who might still have some doubts about who are we talking about, he’s the motorsport legend Walter Röhrl, who was driving a Porsche 911SC HEIGO in this edition of the Valpantena.

Come accade da 12 anni a questa parte, il Revival Valpantena permette a tutti gli appassionati di vedere correre nuovamente alcune tra le più iconiche e belle auto del rallysmo. Chiaramente non tutti i piloti guidano con il coltello tra i denti

As it happens since 12 years ago, the Revival Valpantena allows all fans to see racing again some of most iconic and beautiful rally cars ever. Of course not all the drivers drive pedal-to-the-metal

 

ma state pur certi che lo spettacolo non manca, specie se tra gli iscritti c’è gente con il piede pesante come Pedro, al volante di una splendida Lancia Stratos.

but you can be sure that the show is not missing, especially if among the entrants there’s people with the heavy foot like the Pedro, at the wheel of a gorgeous Lancia Stratos.

 

Tra le auto più belle (e ci permettiamo di aggiungere una nota personale, tra le meglio guidate) di questa edizione sicuramente ci mettiamo la Ferrari 308 GTB Gr.4 con la iconica livrea “VS Olio Fiat”, portata di traverso tra le strade della Lessinia dall’equipaggio composto da “Lucky” Battistolli e Rudy Dal Pozzo.

Among the most beautiful cars (and we would like to add a personal note, between the best driven) of this edition we certainly put the Ferrari 308 GTB Gr.4 with the iconic “VS Olio Fiat” livery, drove sideways on the Lessinia’s roads by the duo “Lucky” Battistolli and Rudy Dal Pozzo .

 

Ma anche l’Austriaco Marco Maurer, con la splendida Audi Quattro con i classici colori della casa degli anelli, ha mostrato agli amanti dei rally come va spremuto quel rabbioso 5 cilindri, motore con un sound riconoscibile da chilometri di distanza.

But also the Austrian Marco Maurer, with the wonderful Audi Quattro with the classic colors of the brand of the rings, has shown  to the rally lovers how that mean 5 pots needs to be pushed to its limits, an engine with a sound recognizable from miles away.

 

Tanto per farvi capire la qualità delle auto iscritte al Revival Valpantena, cosa ne dite di questa francesina in assetto EVO 2? Peugeot 205 T16, la macchina che ha dato vita a tante controversie a fine mondiale nel 1985. La vediamo apparire, passare ed andarsene con un lungo borbottio e lo scarico che sputa fiamme. Pelle d’oca…

Just to let you understand the quality of the cars entered at the Revival Valpantena, what do you think about this French lady in EVO 2 spec? Peugeot 205 T16, the car that gave birth to many disputes at the end of the 1985 championship. We see it appearing, passing by and going away with a long mumble and the exhaust that splits fire. Goose bumps…

 

Un po’ sottotono rispetto alle edizioni precedenti ma pur sempre con auto di altissima qualità, il marchio Lancia tra le Gruppo B è stato rappresentato da un paio di 037

A little bit subdued compared to the previous editions but still with top class cars, the Lancia brand between the Group B machines has been represented by a couple of 037s

 

e due splendide Delta S4, una ex Tabaton con la livrea “Grifone Oro”, pazzesca con quei colori nero/oro

e una ex Alen/Kivimaki con la più iconica livrea di sempre, quella Martini, riconosciuta da chiunque, meno esperti inclusi. Il compressore volumetrico che fischia in uscita dalle curve più lente per poi lasciare spazio al turbocompressore non appena viene raggiunto il giusto range di giri motore. Che auto pazzesca, ancora oggi a 30 anni di distanza è una delle più brutali di sempre e vederla da vivo, mentre corre su una prova speciale, beh, è qualcosa di assolutamente epico.

The supercharger that whines at the exit of the slowest corners just to leave space to the turbocharger as soon as the right rpm range has been reached. What a mental car, even today after 30 years is one of the most brutal ever to see live, while it runs on a special stage, well, that something absolutely epic.

 

Nonostante il meteo non proprio dalla parte di concorrenti e spettatori, con la giornata di Sabato caratterizzata da un fortissimo vento unito alla pioggia, ci siamo bardati nei nostri vestiti pesanti  e ci siamo impegnati nel cogliere l’essenza di questo evento

Despite the weather not really on the side of both entrants and spectators, with Saturday characterized by a really strong wind mixed with rain, we harnessed ourselves in our rain gear and we committed to grab the essence of this event

che non per forza corrisponde a traversi di precisione, anzi, sono le auto stesse il fulcro di tutto l’evento. Le protagoniste sono loro.

which not necessarily corresponds to precision skids, on the contrary, the cars themselves are the main highlight of this event. They are the true protagonists.

 

Auto che dagli anni ‘60/’70 hanno scritto la storia del rallysmo, un’era, durata fino ai primi anni ’90, in cui la gente ancora si faceva migliaia di chilometri per vedere i propri idoli correre, dove non esisteva internet che ti da la possibilità di conoscere tutto fino ai minimi particolari stando seduti sulla poltrona di casa, dove le auto erano analogiche e meccaniche e dove i piloti, dotati di testicoli che pagavano il biglietto aereo da tanto erano grandi, erano dei veri e propri idoli sia degli adulti che dei bambini.

Cars that since the 60s and 70s have written the history of rallying, an era, lasted until the first years of the 90s, where the people still used to do thousands of miles to see their idols racing, where there was no internet that gives you the opportunity to know everything down to the smallest details while sitting on the armchair at home, where the cars where analogue and mechanical and where the drivers, with testicles that big that they had to pay for the plane ticket, were some real idols of both adults and kids.

 

Le stupende vallate della Lessinia sono uno scenario perfetto per questa manifestazione. Le prove speciali, di un formato più “umano” rispetto a quelle chilometriche del passato, sono tecniche ed eterogenee.

The gorgeous Lessinia valleys are the perfect scenario for this event. The special stages, with more “humanized” format compared to the kilometric ones of the past, are technical and heterogeneous.

 

E quando cala la notte… è quasi magia…

And when night falls… it’s almost magic…

 

Le scie lasciate dai fari ad alta profondità montati sui paraurti delle auto, il rumore dei motori che si avvicinano nel silenzio più totale della natura. Vale decisamente la pena subire qualche ora di freddo e umidità per godersi tutto questo.

The light trails of the high beams headlights mounted on the front bumpers of the cars, the noise of the engines approaching in the total silence of nature. It’s definitely worth the pain of suffering a few hours of cold and humidity to enjoy all of this.

Also the morning reorder at the Cantine Bertani is a perfect moment to have a closer look to both cars…

 

… che i piloti, spesso immersi in concentrazione, pensieri e tensione. Non sarà una tappa valida per il mondiale rally ma quando hai davanti a te una giornata intera fatta di tornanti, prove speciali tecniche e la voglia di portare a casa la macchina intera può sicuramente essere stressante, specie se prima di partire inizia a piovere insistentemente.

… and drivers, often dipped in concentration, thoughts and tension. It might not be an event worth for the world rally championship but when you have to expert a day made of hairpins, technical special stages and the will to take the car back home in one piece it can definitely be stressful, especially if before the start it starts to rain persistently.

 

Dopo due giorni intensi il 12° Rally Revival Valpantena si conclude con la coppia Senna/Zaffani a vincere la gara di regolarità su Golf GTI, precedendo di poco l’equipaggio Mozzi/Biacca, secondi sulla Lancia Fulvia HF 1.6.

After two intense days the 12^th Rally Revival Valpantena comes to an end with the crew Senna/Zaffani winning the regularity race with a Golf GTI, just ahead of the duo Mozzi/Biacca, second overall with a Lancia Fulvia HF 1.6.

 

 Ad essere sinceri siamo comunque contenti del fatto che alcuni piloti hanno preferito prendere qualche penalità a favore dello spettacolo per il pubblico

To be honest, we’re still happy about the fact that a few drivers preferred to take some penalty in favor of the show for the public

e noi, nonostante le intemperie e un po’ di raffreddore, siamo felici di potervi mostrare e raccontare quello che senza dubbio è uno dei rally per auto storiche più bello d’Italia, se non d’Europa visto anche il numero di concorrenti stranieri al via e di due nostri cari amici che sono scesi fin dalla lontana Norvegia per venire a Rally Revival Valpantena. Questa, signori, è vera passione per lo sport che tanto amiamo.

and we are happy, despite the bad weather and a bit of flue, to be able to show and tell you what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful historic rally car in Italy, if not in Europe also judging by the number of foreign entrants and by two our dear friends that came down from the far away Norway to come and see the Rally Revival Valpantena. This, Gentlemen, is real passion for the sport that we really love.
