Hirundo

Motorsport. La maggior parte della gente quando sente questa parola pensa subito alle corse automobilistiche o motociclistiche. E come dargli torto. Spesso però ci si dimentica che con quel termine si indica qualsiasi genere di sport in cui è coinvolto l’uso di un motore e allora la faccenda si allarga non di poco. Soprattutto quando si arriva a parlare di motonautica.

Motorsport. Most of the people when hear this word they immediately think about cars or motorbikes racing. And who could blame them. But often we forget that with that term is indicated ant kind of sport where and engine is involved and then the topic expands to a whole new level. Especially when it comes to speedboat racing.

 

Questa branca del motorsport non solo si dedica alla cosa che più tutti noi amiamo, la velocità, ma in alcune categorie ha anche tanto in comune con il mondo dell’automobile. Infatti diverse imbarcazioni, soprattutto in passato, usavano proprio i motori di alcune delle più famose auto in commercio, ovviamente opportunamente elaborati. D’altronde si tratta sempre di gareggiare, giusto?

This part of motorspor is not only dedicated to the thing we all love the most, speed, but some categories also have a lot in common with the automotive world. In fact various boats, especially in the past, used the engines of some of the most famous production cars, of course properly tuned. On the other hand it’s always about racing, right?

Abbiamo così deciso per una volta di approfondire la questione e siamo andati a capire qualcosa di più di questo stupendo sport motoristico andando ad assistere al Sacca Racer Meeting, una evento non competitivo dedicato agli idroplani che hanno fatto la storia della motonautica dagli anni ’50 ai primi anni ’90.

So we decided for once to pursue the matter and we went to understand a bit more about this beautiful motor racing sport and to witness the Sacca Racer Meeting, a non competitive event dedicated to the hydroplanes that made the history of speedboat racing from the 50s to the early 90s.

Gli idroplani. Stupendi, affusolati, progettati per fendere acqua e aria. Sono scafi realizzati in legno, larghi nella parte anteriore, per favorire la stabilità, e stretti al posteriore. Spesso il legno è a vista, ricoperto di uno strato protettivo, ed è semplicemente un capolavoro.

The hydroplanes. Fantastic, streamlined, developed to cut both water and air. These are hulls made of wood, large at the front, to give more stability, and narrow at the back. The wood is often visible, covered by a protective layer, and this is just a masterpiece.

 

La motonautica è uno sport per gente coraggiosa, per piloti che sanno affrontare anche situazioni decisamente pericolose e soprattutto è uno sport con una grandissima tradizione, specialmente qui in Italia. Basta leggere sulle carene di alcune imbarcazioni i titoli vinti per capire che non siamo di fronte a un raduno di semplici appassionati di motonautica. Qui c’è la storia. Una storia affascinante. Sicuramente diversa da quella che siete abituati a leggere qui su Hirundo, ma pur sempre da trattare con estrema riverenza.

Speedboat racing is a sport for brave people, for drivers who know how to deal with very risky situations and most of all is a sport with a huge tradition, especially here in Italy. Just read on the side of some of the boats the titles won in the past to understand that we’re not at a simple meeting of speedboat racing enthusiasts. There is history here. A very fascinating history. For sure a lot different from the one you’re used to read here on Hirundo, but still to be treated with extreme reverence.

 

Al contrario di quello che molti pensano, l’ambiente non è per nulla “snob” ne tantomeno elitario. Tutti i partecipanti sono molto cordiali e felici di parlare delle loro imbarcazioni, dei titoli vinti, delle gare corse e delle lotte con gli avversari sui fiumi, nei laghi e nei bacini artificiali

Unlike what many think, this is not a “snob” ambient, not even elitist. All the racers are very kind and happy to talk about their boats, the titles won, the races and about the fights with the opponents on the rivers, on the lakes and on the artificial ponds

 

e spesso sono già gli stessi idroplani a parlare.

and sometimes the hydroplanes  can speak for themselves.

 

L’evento è diviso in tre categorie. La più numerosa è quella dei “racer pre ‘84”, divisa a sua volta in due batterie per permettere l’esibizione delle imbarcazioni in tutta sicurezza.

The event is divided into three categories. The largest is the one of the “racer pre ‘84”, divided in its turn into two groups to allow the performance of the boats in complete safety.

 

Nonostante l’età di alcuni idroplani nessuno si è fatto intimidire dalle acque del Po, garantendo un bellissimo spettacolo a tutto il pubblico radunato sulla sponda del fiume.

Despite the age of some hydroplanes no one was afraid by the water of the Po river, ensuring a great show to all the spectators gathered on the bank of the river.

 

La maggior parte dei motori usati in questa categoria sono Alfa Romeo, per la precisione il mitico bialbero 2000cc.

Most of the engines used in this category are Alfa Romeo, to be precise the mighty 2000cc twincam.

Ma non solo, sempre made in Arese, il glorioso V8 2500cc della Montreal, opportunamente elaborato da Autodelta fino a raggiungere i 290cv e montato su due scafi Celli datati 1967 e 1968.

But only that one, always made in Arese, the glorious V8 2500cc of the Montreal, properly tuned by Autodelta to reach the 290bhp mark and used on two Celli hulls from 1967 and 1968.

 

Nella categoria “racer post ‘84” lo spettacolo non è stato da meno, anzi. Le imbarcazioni sono quasi sempre in planata e durante le virate i piloti saltano sull’acqua sollevando veri e propri muri d’acqua.

In the category “racer post ‘84” the show was not less exciting indeed. The boats are almost always gliding and during the quick turns the drivers jump on the water raising some proper walls of water.

 

La barca dalle sembianze più moderne di questo schieramento è senza dubbio la Clerici motorizzata BMW datata 1994. Veramente stupenda con la sua linea affusolata e aerodinamica.

The boat with the more modern look of this group is for sure the 1994 BMW powered Clerici. Absolutely wonderful with its sleek and aerodynamic shape.

 

L’ultimo ma non meno spettacolare raggruppamento è quello delle “unlimited”. Come la parola stessa suggerisce, in questa categoria sono la potenza e le grosse cilindrate a farla da padrona.  La prima barca a scendere in acqua è una Celli-Timossi del 1965. Il motore è un Chrysler 6200cc V8!

The last but not less exciting group is the one of the “unlimited”. As the word itself might suggests, in this category is all about power and big engines. The first boat to be lowered on the water is a 1965 Celli-Timossi. The engine is a Chrysler 6200cc V8!

 

Subito dopo viene calato questo scafo Celli del 1968 e il motore è ancora più grande. BPM Vulcano V8 da 7000cc

ma al duetto poi si è unita un’ultima imbarcazione. Lo splendido idroplano Celli “El Biso V”, motorizzato da un V8 BPM da 8000cc…

but then a last boat joined the beautiful couple. The gorgeous Celli hydroplane “El Biso V”, powered by an 8000cc V8 BPM engine… 

Vi assicuriamo che in questo momento, con gli idroplani che si esibivano in una serie di run sul dritto, era come essere su un drag strip a guardare le muscle car americane. Fatta eccezione che qui erano sull’acqua di un fiume… con i piloti che indossavano appena un giubotto di salvataggio e un casco…!!!

we can assure you that is this moment, with the hydroplanes were performing in a series of runs on the straight, it was like being on a drag strip watching American muscle cars. A part from the fact that here they were on the water of a river… with the drivers that were wearing just a life jacket and a helmet…!!!

 

Questa edizione del Sacca Racer Meeting è inoltre stata l’occasione per ricordare un grandissimo pilota Italiano della motonautica scomparso l’anno scorso, Paolo Zantelli. Zantelli è stato il pilota più titolato della categoria Formula 2 e in memoria di lui e del suo scafo giallo è sceso in acqua un’imbarcazione da F2, gialla, proprio come la sua.

This edition of the Sacca Racer Meeting was also the occasion to remember a great Italian speedboat racer that was gone last year during an accident, Paolo Zantelli. Zantelli was the most awarded driver of the Formula 2 category and in memory of him and of his yellow hull, an F2 yellow boat was dropped on the water, just like his own.

 

Il numero 25 ha solcato di nuovo l’acqua, con una breve parata, ed è stato un momento veramente inteso ed emozionante.

The number 25 has sailed the water again, with a brief parade, and it has been a very intense and emotional moment.

 

Il mondo della motonautica è sicuramente diverso da quello che siamo abituati a seguire. E’ un tipo di motorsport che va vissuto e che, secondo noi, va anche approfondito. Lo spettacolo non manca, gli idroplani sono oggetti stupendi e carichi di storia e le persone sono tutte disponibili e sorridenti. Il prossimo evento si terrà il 6-7 Settembre sul Lago di Viverone e successivamente il 20-21 Settembre all’Idroscalo di Milano. Poi non dite che noi non vi abbiamo avvertito!

The world of speedboat racing is definitely different from the one we use to follow. It’s a kind of motorsport that has to be lived and that, in our opinion, it also needs to be deepened. The show is not lacking, the hydroplanes are wonderful objects full of history and the people are all very kind and smiling. The next event will be the 6-7 of September on the Lago di Viverone and right after that one the 20-21 of September at the Idroscalo di Milano. Then do not tell us that we have not warned you!
