1000 Miglia 2014: The Red Arrow Strikes Again

Milleseicento chilometri, quattro giorni al volante di auto che hanno fatto la storia dell’automobilismo, partendo da Brescia, arrivando fino a Roma passando dalla sponda Adriatica e tornando indietro alla “Leonessa d’Italia” passando attraverso Toscana ed Emilia Romagna. In sintesi il concept della Mille Miglia è proprio questo.

Sixteenhundred kilometers, four days behind the wheel of cars that have made tha automotive history, starting from Brescia, coming down to Rome passing from the Adriatic side and going back to the “Leonessa d’Italia” passing through Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. In summary, the concept of the Mille Miglia is just that.

In pratica, chi ha partecipato lo sa bene, è molto più di un semplice gita attraverso l’Italia. Quella che Enzo Ferrari definì come “la corsa più bella del mondo” oggi è una rievocazione storica della Mille Miglia di velocità (corsa dal 1927 al 1957 con la pausa a causa della guerra), una gara di regolarità che si svolge su strade aperte al pubblico e che nonostante le tappe da quasi 400km l’una mette a dura prova sia le auto che gli equipaggi.

In practical terms, those who participated knows this well, it’s much more than just a simple trip across Italy. The one that Enzo Ferrari called as “the most beautiful race in the world” today is a reenactment of the Mille Miglia race (that was held from 1927 to 1957 with a stop due to the WWI), a regularity race that takes place on public roads and that despite the almost 400km for each stage it puts a strain on both cars and drivers.

La cosa bella della Mille Miglia è lo spirito. Per tutti quanti vedere i passaggi delle auto è una festa, una celebrazione dell’automobile e dell’automobilismo. Gente di ogni età si raduna a bordo strada e nei centri storici per vedere le macchine, sentirne gli odori, ascoltarne i rombi.

The most beautiful thing of the Mille Miglia is the spirit. For everyone looking at the cars passing by is a joy, celebration of both motoring and the automobile. People of every ages gathers next to the road and in the historical centers to see the cars, smell the odors, hear the engine noises.

La Mille Miglia ti fa venire la pelle d’oca. E’ inebriante. Le auto in gara sono 450 e ci mettono circa tre ore a sfilare davanti a una singola postazione. E’ una vera e propria festa quando passano le prime auto anteguerra, quelle auto che hanno dato vita alla Mille Miglia più di 80 anni fa e che ancora oggi sono un pilastro portante della manifestazione.

The Mille Miglia gives you goose bumps. It’s intoxicant. The cars are almost 450 and they take almost 3 hours to parade in front of a single location. It’s a proper joy when the first pre-war cars pass by, those cars which have given birth to the Mille Miglia more than 80 years ago and that still toady are a central part of the event.

Per noi l’evento ha inizio Giovedì 15 Maggio, direttamente nelle vie e nelle piazze di Brescia.

For us the event starts Thursday, May 15, right from the streets and the squares of Brescia.

Qui le auto sfilano, vengono presentate e successivamente esposte al pubblico.

Here the cars pass by, are presented and right after exposed to the public.

Poter ammirare da vicino tutte queste bellezze non ha veramente prezzo. I dettagli dei fregi, delle scritte, dei segni del tempo che danno carattere alle auto, sono qualcosa che potrebbero tenere un appassionato per ore a vagare per la città con lo sguardo fisso su questi capolavori su ruote.

To be able to see closely all these beauties is absolutely priceless. The details of the emblems, of the writings, of the signs of aging which give character to the cars, are something that could hold a fan for hours wandering around the city with his gaze fixed on these masterpieces on wheels.

e quando passano le celebrità si creano momenti di vero caos. Il famoso presentatore televisivo Americano Jay Leno è stato uno dei primi personaggi famosi a sfilare, a bordo di una Jaguar XK120 della Ecurie Ecosse che condivideva con il designer delle Jaguar Ian Callum

and when the celebrities pass by there are moments of pure chaos. The famous American TV host Jay Leno has been one of the first celebrities to parade, driving a Jaguar XK120 of the Ecurie Ecosse which was shared with the Jaguar designer Ian Callum

seguiti poco dopo da un’altra coppia altrettanto famosa, specialmente nel mondo delle corse: gli ex piloti di Formula 1 Martin Brundle e Bruno Senna.

followed shortly after by another quite famous duo, especially in the motorsport world: the ex F1 drivers Martin Brundle and Bruno Senna.

Ma gli equipaggi non sono composti solo da uomini. Queste due eleganti signore per esempio hanno preso il via alla corsa a bordo di una stupenda Cisitalia 202 SMM Nuvolari Spider del 1947, auto che per altro ha fatto la storia della Mille Miglia. La sigla SMM infatti sta a significare Spider Mille Miglia e il nome Nuvolari viene proprio dalla vittoria di classe (e secondo assoluto) conseguita da “Nivola” a bordo di questa auto nel 1947.

But the crews are not only composed by men. These two elegant ladies for example got underway the race on a gorgeous 1947 Cisitalia 202 SMM Nuvolari Spider, cars that also made a bit of the story of the Mille Miglia. The initials SMM in fact mean Spider Mille Miglia and the name Nuvolari comes right from the class victory (and second overall) achieved by “Nivola” driving this car in 1947.

Dopo la lunga sfilata delle auto ci spostiamo lungo le vie di Brescia dove, ovviamente, incrociamo altre auto che hanno fatto la storia dell’automobilismo

After the long cars parade we move along the streets of Brescia where, of course, we come across other cars that wrote a piece of automotive history

e insieme alle auto troviamo anche delle bellissime ragazze con tanto di “caschetto” e occhialoni, proprio come quelli che si usavano agli esordi della Mille Miglia.

and together with the cars we also find the wonderful girls complete with “helmet” and goggles, just like the ones that were used at the beginnings of the Mille Miglia.

Sul viale che porta verso il punto di partenza della gara vediamo passare anche l’auto più anziana tra quelle iscritte, una Alfa Romeo G1 del 1921. La G1 è stata la prima Alfa Romeo a usare un motore a 6 cilindri in linea (da 6.567 centimetri cubi e con una potenza di 65cv e 293 N/m di coppia) e venne prodotta in appena 52 esemplari.

On the main road that takes to the starting line of the race we also see the oldest cars among the entrants, an Alfa Romeo G1 from 1921. The G1 has been the first Alfa Romeo to use a 6 in line cylinders engine (6.567 cc with a power output of 65bhp and 293 N/m of torque) and it was produced in just 52 units.

E tra i tanti equipaggi scorgiamo un volto decisamente familiare. Ex pilota di Formula 1 ma soprattutto leggenda della 24h di Le Mans con ben 6 vittorie, il Belga Jacky Ickx accenna un sorriso e riparte a tutto gas a bordo della Porsche 550 Spyder RS con il suo compagno di viaggio, il Co-Presidente di Chopard Mr. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, alla guida di questa stupenda barchetta made in Stuttgart.

And between the many cars we spot a very familiar face. Ex F1 driver but especially 24h of Le Mans legend with an impressive 6 victories, the Belgian Jacky Ickx hints a smile and goes away at full throttle on the Porsche 550 Spyders RS with his traveling companion, Co-President of Chopard Mr. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, at the wheel of this beautiful barchetta made in Stuttgart.

Decidiamo di portarci avanti lungo il percorso percorrendo qualche chilometro. Mentre la maggior parte della gente si ferma nei centri abitati noi scegliamo di allontanarci dalla bolgia e cercare qualche punto suggestivo per goderci al meglio il passaggio della Mille Miglia, che ricordiamo essere una competizione che si svolge su strade aperte al pubblico. Ore 18:30. Si scorgono le prime auto anteguerra all’orizzonte, nel giro di pochi secondi siamo travolti dall’odore di olio e benzina che proviene dagli scarichi di OM, Bugatti, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Bentley.

We decided to take us further along the route by doing a few kilometers. While most of the people stop in the cities and towns we opted to get away from the crowd and find some suggestive spots to enjoy the Mille Miglia at its best, remember that being a competition that takes place on public roads. 6:30 p.m. The first pre-war cars appears at the horizon, in a matter of few seconds we are overwhelmed by the smell of oil and petrol that comes from the exhausts of OMs, Bugattis, Lancias, Alfa Romeos, Bentleys.

E intanto il sole inizia lentamente a calare…

o questa BMW 328 Coupè del 1937, grazie alla quale sono poi nate tutte le generazioni di sportive BMW a distanza di quasi 30 anni, è qualcosa di difficilmente descrivibile a parole. Insomma, qui c’è LA storia dell’automobilismo, storia che sta attraversando il nostro Paese dal nord al centro Italia.

or this 1937 BMW 328 Coupè, thanks to which every generation of sporty BMWs are born after almost 30 years, is something very difficult to explain in a few words. In short, here there is THE history on the automobile, history that is crossing our Country from the north to the central part of Italy.

Nel giro di poco ci troviamo al tramonto, in un viale alberato, a godere della fine di una giornata intensa, speciale e semplicemente magica.

In a matter or moments we find ourselves at sunset, in an avenue with trees all around, enjoying the end of an intense, special and simply magical day.

Tra le auto che passano in questa stupenda atmosfera, anche Wolfgang e Ferdinand Porsche, appartenenti alla celebre famiglia tedesca, a bordo di una 356 Speedster del 1955

e con un perfetto tempismo, non appena la luce inizia ad abbandonarci e il sole a colorare il cielo con stupendi colori arancio/rosa, le ultime auto della carovana della Mille Miglia compaiono all’orizzonte. Questa stupenda Alfa Romeo 1900 SSZ Super Sprint Zagato, guidata da Andrea Zagato (Presidente e nipote del fondatore della famosa e rinomata carrozzeria Milanese) con le sue stupende linee ci accompagna verso la fine della nostra giornata e della prima tappa della Mille Miglia.

and with a perfect timing, as soon as the light starts to leave us and the sun to colour the sky with wonderful orange/pink colours, the last cars of the convoy of the Mille Miglia compare to the horizon. This amazing Alfa Romeo 1900 SSZ Super Sprint Zagato, driven by Andrea Zagato (President and grandson of the founder of the famous and prestigious coachbuilder of Milan) with its beautiful lines takes us to the end of our day and of the first stage of the Mille Miglia.

Non abbiamo avuto modo di seguire l’intera corsa ma ci siamo ripromessi di andare in un posto molto suggestivo per seguire una parte dell’ultima giornata. Tornare a Brescia, in mezzo al caos, non avrebbe avuto lo stesso “sapore” che immortalare queste bellezze automobilistiche in mezzo alle campagne, alle vigne e con uno splendido cielo blu in una giornata di sole.

We have not been able to follow the entire race but we promised to ourselves to go to a very suggestive place to follow part of the last day. Going back to Brescia, in the midst of chaos, it would not have had the same “taste” as shooting these automotive pieces of art in the middle of the countryside, of the vineyards and with a great blue sky in a sunny day.

E intanto le auto continuano a passarci davanti a piccoli gruppi. Questa Mercedes 300SL W194, telaio #000 06/52, è celebre per quell’ala posta sopra il tetto. In realtà non è un’ala ma un air brake che venne sviluppato e testato (con poco successo) per la 24h di Le Mans. Una delle tante rarità presenti alla Mille Miglia.

Meanwhile the cars keep passing in front of us in small groups. This Mercedes 300SL W194, chassis #000 06/52, is famous for that wing on the top of the roof. Well, that’s not a wing but an air brake that was developed and tested (with very few success) for the Le Mans 24h race. One of the many rarities attending the Mille Miglia.

L’attrice e modella Jodie Kidd, con il fidanzato David Blakeley, era proprio a suo agio alla guida di questa bellissima Jaguar XK120 OTS e ha concluso con successo la sua Mille Miglia finendo tutti i 1600km del percorso,

Tutti gli equipaggi delle varie barchette Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo sono probabilmente quelli che più si sono godute questo passaggio nella natura. Seduta bassa a “sentire” la strada, capelli al vento e il rombo del motore… probabilmente un’esperienza che non ha prezzo…

All the crews of the various barchettas made by Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, OSCA are probably the ones that enjoyed the most this road across the nature. Low seats to “feel” the road, hair in the wind and the roar of the engine… probably a priceless experience…

Ci sarebbe ancora tanto da dire su questa Mille Miglia, sulle auto, sui piloti, sugli scenari, ma probabilmente non basterebbe un giorno intero di racconti. Noi ci auguriamo che tramite le nostre immagini e il nostro breve racconto siate riusciti a carpire l’essenza e la bellezza di questa corsa.
