Vista mozzafiato, una stupenda giornata di sole senza una nuvola in cielo e prove speciali degne del campionato mondiale rally. Per la 38esima edizione del Rally 1000 Miglia, nonché per la prima assoluta del neonato Campionato Italiano WRC, sono state fatte le cose in grande.

A breathtaking view, a beautiful sunny day without a single cloud in the sky and special stages worth of the world rally championship. For the 38^th edition of the Rally 1000 Miglia, as well as first ever event for the newborn Italian WRC Championship, things were made it big.

 

Dopo un anno di pausa è stata introdotta nuovamente la prova speciale “Tremosine”, una delle strade più belle e tecniche di tutto il nord Italia se non dell’intero Paese. Una lingua di asfalto lunga quasi 15km (14,9) che si districa fino all’interno delle montagne che costeggiano il Lago di Garda e che mette a dura prova piloti e macchine.

After a year of break, the special stage “Tremosine”, one of the most beautiful and technical roads in the north of Italy if not of the whole Country, has been introduced again. A stripe of tarmac almost 15km long (14,9) that that winds its way up and inside the mountains that goes along the Garda Lake and that puts a strain on both drivers and cars.

Ed è proprio su questa PS che abbiamo scelto per seguire il 38° Rally 1000 Miglia. E se le prime immagini non fossero ancora bastate, nel corso dell’articolo capirete il perché di questa scelta.

And it’s on this very SS that we decided to follow the 38^th Rally 1000 Miglia. If the first images were still not have been enough, during the article you will understand the reasons for this choice.

 

Il primo passaggio è previsto per le 9:26 e in perfetto orario si iniziano a sentire i rombi dei 4 cilindri che salgono lungo le tortuose strade. La sequenza delle curve sembra un disegno fatto a pennello, come un  ideogramma giapponese sapientemente tracciato dalle abili mani di un maestro calligrafo.

The first pass is planned at 9:26am and in perfect timing we started to hear the sound of the 4 cylinders engines that climb the winding roads. The sequence of the bends looks like a drawing done with a brush, like a Japanese ideogram expertly traced by the skilled hands of a master calligrapher.

 

Giri del motore portati al limitatore, prima ingranata e pochi istanti dopo siamo travolti dallo spostamento d’aria creato dalle auto. Gli equipaggi sono di quelli che quando leggi i nomi sull’elenco iscritti non lasciano tanti dubbi all’immaginazione. Di fatti la precisione e la tecnica di guida è veramente di altissimo livello.

Revs to the limiter, first gear engaged and after a few instants we are swept up by the blast caused by cars. The teams are those that when you read the names on the entrants list they do not leave many doubts to the imagination. In fact the precision and the driving skills are absolutely of the highest level.

 

Passare a pochi centimetri – e talvolta millimetri – dai guard rail di legno non è roba per tutti. Ogni errore si paga, e anche caro. La scarpata è proprio al di là di quei tronchi messi per evitare il peggio ma i piloti spingono forte sull’acceleratore senza farsi intimorire e per gli spettatori è spettacolo allo stato puro.

Driving a few centimeters – sometimes even millimeters – away from the wooden guard rails is not something for everyone. You pay for every mistake, and you’re playing with danger. The cliff is right there, just over those trunks placed just to avoid the worst, but the drivers push hard and fearless on the throttle and for the spectators is pure show.

 

Si, perché lo spettacolo non si trova solo nel tornante fatto in freno a mano o nel salto. La pulizia della guida, il ritmo consistente e la velocità a cui si affrontano le sequenze di curve è altrettanto emozionante, specie se il tutto è contornato da un paesaggio mozzafiato.

Yes, because the show is not only in pulling the hand brake in the hairpin or in the jump. The cleanliness of the drive, the consistent rhythm and the speed at which they take the sequences of curves is just as exciting, especially if everything is surrounded by a breathtaking panorama.

E non crediate che solo i piloti delle potenti WRC e delle Super2000 siano così sfrontati da guidare al limite. Gli equipaggi delle piccole “N” e “R” non sono di certo da meno, anzi, proprio a causa dei pochi cavalli sono sempre costretti a mantenere una guida il più pulito possibile per limare importanti decimi.

And you should not think that only the drivers of the powerful WRC and Super 2000 cars are so bold to drive at the limit. The crews of the small “N” and “R” are not less brave for sure, on the contrary, because of the less power, they always need to keep their driving as clean as possible to shave some tenths from the time.

 

Per non farsi mancare nulla, tra le auto presenti al via anche una breve selezione di auto storiche. E credeteci quando diciamo che abbiamo avuto la pelle d’oca nel vedere correre alcune classiche del rallysmo in questo magnifico scenario.

In order not to miss anything, among the entrants, also a small selection of historic cars. And trust us when we say that we had goose bumps while watching some classic rally icons in this amazing environment.

Per pochi e intensi minuti è stato come tornare indietro negli anni ’70.

For a few and intense minutes it has been like going back in the 70s.

 

La seconda tornata di questa prova speciale si tiene nel pomeriggio e così ci spostiamo in un altro passaggio caratteristico, anch’esso assolutamente stupendo e tecnico ma completamente diverso dal panorama soleggiato del mattino.

The second round of this special stage takes place in the afternoon, so we move on to another typical place, which is also technical and absolutely gorgeous but completely different from the sunny panorama of the morning.

Freddo, umido e all’ombra delle montagne che ci sovrastano con le loro pareti rocciose.

Cold, humid and in the shade of the mountains that dominate us with their rocky walls.

 

Il torrente che scorre al di sotto del livello stradale è una fonte continua di rumore che alla lunga diventa quasi assordante ma al passaggio delle auto nelle gallerie tutto cambia.

The stream that runs below the street level is an endless source of noise that in the long run becomes almost deafening but when the cars blast into the galleries everything changes.

 

Gli scoppi provenienti dagli scarichi a ogni cambio di marcia sono paragonabili alle fucilate di una calibro .50, fanno tremare il terreno e sono di una violenza inaudita. E ti fanno sentire vivo, ti fanno quasi fischiare i timpani e, da veri petrolhead, ci fanno sogghignare compiaciuti.

The explosions from the exhausts at every gear change are are comparable to the shot of a .50 caliber, they make the ground shaking and are absolutely brutal. And they make you feel alive, they almost smash your eardrums and, since we’re true petrolheads, make us pleasingly  chuckle.

 

Lo stretto ponte che attraversa il torrente è insidioso, specialmente in uscita dove la parete rocciosa non perdona eventuali esitazioni al volante. Le Gruppo N ed R entrano quasi tutte in maniera feroce e l’abilità di molti piloti è veramente da ammirare.

The narrow bridge that goes over the stream is tricky, especially when coming out of it, where the rocky wall does not forgive any hesitation with the steering wheel. Almost every Group N and R comes into it in a ferocious manner and the driving skills of many drivers have to be admired.

 

A percorrere la seconda manche sulla PS “Tremosine”, anche gli equipaggi della categoria Junior, creata appositamente per contenere i costi e permettere a diversi piloti di correre un rally così spettacolare. Una formula intelligente che ha visto ben 32 iscritti alla partenza.

To take the second heat on the SS “Tremosine”, also the teams of the Junior class, created on purpose to keep the costs at a low rate and to let many other drivers to take part to a rally this beautiful. A smart format which saw as many as 32 members at the start.

Prime di tirare le somme di questa stupenda edizione del Rally 1000 Miglia, nonché della prima assoluta del Campionato Italiano WRC, bisogna fare una considerazione doverosa. La prova speciale “Tremosine” è una delle più belle e tecniche che esistono in Italia e speriamo vivamente che nelle prossime edizioni gli organizzatori non decidano di metterla in stand-by.

Before jumping to the conclusions of this wonderful edition of the Rally 1000 Miglia, as well as of the first ever race of the Italian WRC Championship, we need to make a rightful consideration. “Tremosine” is one of the most beautiful and technical special stages that exist in Italy and we do really hope that in the next editions the organizers won’t put it in stand-by.

 

Detto questo, la classifica finale nella categoria maggiore è la dimostrazione di quanto sia avvincente questo evento. Infatti la battaglia è stata molto serrata fino alla fine e a spuntarla al termine delle 8 prove speciali sono stati Pedersoli e Romano a bordo della Citroen C4 WRC,

That said, the final classification in the top class is the demonstration of how much challenging this event is. In fact the battle has been really close till the end and to win after the 8 special stages have been Pedersoli and Romano with their Citroen C4 WRC,

 

divisi soltanto da 2,9 secondi dall’equipaggio Signor-Bernandi su Ford Focus WRC,

splitted by just 2,9 seconds from the team Signor-Bernandi on Ford Focus WRC,

 

mentre l’ultimo gradino del podio se lo sono aggiudicato Sossella e Nicola sulla Ford Fiesta WRC.

while on the last step of the podium we find Sossella and Nicola on the Ford Fiesta WRC.

 

Tra le storiche la Porsche 911 di Superti-Quarantani ha dominato la gara

e in classifica Junior l’equipaggio Zigliani-Zigliani con la Peugeot 207 Super2000 se l’è giocata fino alla fine con la Clio R3 di Bondioni e Rocco, vincendo di appena 5,2 secondi.

and in the Junior class the team Zigliani-Zigliani with the Peugoet 207 Super2000 have fight till the end with the Clio R3 of Bondioni and Rocco, winning by just 5,2 seconds.
