Hirundo

La prima volta che l’abbiamo vista non riuscivamo a toglierle gli occhi di dosso. Eravamo all’Autodromo di Monza, a coprire una delle tante gare che vi mostriamo nei nostri report, quando passando di fianco al parcheggio della curva Parabolica troviamo lei.

The first time we saw it we could not take our eyes off of it. We were at the Autodromo di Monza, covering one of the many races that we bring to you with our reports, when passing next to the parking space next to the Parabolica corner we found “her”.

 

Unica, minuziosamente restaurata e con una cura maniacale per i dettagli. Questa Fiat Abarth 695 grigio pastello del 1969 è speciale, tanto speciale.

Unique, meticulously restored and with an obsessive attention to the details. This pastel gray Fiat Abarth 695 is special, very special.

 

Piero, Il proprietario, professionista del restauro di lunga data ma con uno passione ancora viva pari a quella di un ragazzo poco più che ventenne, ha dedicato una infinità di ore a questo restauro e il risultato è semplicemente incredibile.

Piero, the owner, a longtime professional restorator with a passion still alive as equal to that of a boy in his early twenties, has dedicated an endless amount of hours into this restoration and the result is absolutely incredible.

 

Ci ritroviamo nel luogo in cui accade la magia e dove l’entusiasmo e la passione la fanno da padrona, la sede della Toff Car a Sesto San Giovanni in provincia di Milano.

We found ourself in the place where the magic happens and where the enthusiasm and the passion still rule, the head office of the Toff Car at Sesto San Giovanni in the outskirts of Milan.

 

Dopo un caffè e quattro chiacchere veniamo subito ai fatti e rimaniamo, un’altra volta, ad ammirarla come se fosse una scultura. E’ bassa, piccola (tanto piccola), larghissima e quello stupendo e caratteristico cofano posteriore aperto sembra urlare la voglia di correre dell’auto.

After a coffee and some small talks we get straight to the facts and we remain, once again, to stare at it as if it was a sculpture. It’s low, small (very small), wide and that beautiful and characteristic open rear hood seems to scream its will of racing.

 

Ascoltare Piero mentre ci racconta la storia e ci introduce ai dettagli della sua piccola 695 è veramente un piacere. L’auto è stata rivettata e rinforzata in punti strategici, rendendo la struttura solida e sicura.

Listening to Piero while he tells us the story and introduces us into the details of his small 695 is really a pleasure. The car has been riveted and reinforced in a lot of strategic points, making the structure solid and safe.

 

Persino il fondo della macchina è stato modificato e ora è piatto.

Even the underfloor of the car has been modified and now is flat.

L’assetto dell’auto è stato ribassato di ben 12cm e di conseguenza le sospensioni sono state particolarmente irrigidite. Pur mantenendo il sistema di molle anteriori a balestra la sensazione alla guida è quello di un vero go-kart. Con l’auto sul piccolo ponte installato ad hoc per la 695 riusciamo a vedere anche i tamburi dei freni maggiorati

The car has been lowered by 12cm and consequently the suspensions have been stiffened properly. Even if it still keeps the original leaf springs setup up front the feeling while driving it is almost the same of a go-kart. With the car on a small hydraulic lift installed on purpose for the 695 we are able to see even the upgraded and bigger drum brakes

e ovviamente, al retrotreno, la parte inferiore del piccolo cuore pulsante della macchina dove salta subito all’occhio il terminale artigianale in acciaio che le dona un sound stupendo tipicamente old school.

and of course, at the rear, the lower part of the small beating heart of the car where immediately pops out the custom made steel exhaust that gives to it a fantastic old school sound.

Ci spostiamo in una strada chiusa nelle vicinanze per fare qualche foto all’aperto e appena ci siamo messi in marcia la 695 si fa subito notare in tutta la sua presenza.

We move over to a closed road in the nearby to take some shots outside and as soon as we were moving the 695 immediately shows its stance.

Alla luce del sole è ancora più bella e si capisce benissimo la qualità del lavoro (se ancora non si fosse capito).

Under the sun light it’s even more beautiful and it’s really understandable the quality of the work that has been done to it (as if it wasn’t already clear).

I passaruota sono stati allargati, tanto, e la carreggiata è ora di 1470mm

The wheel arches have been widened, a lot, and the wheel track is now 1470mm

e ospitano degli stupendi cerchioni scomponibili realizzati su misura che misurano 10×8.

and accomodate a set of gorgeous 3-piece custom made wheels measuring 10×8 all around.

Da qualsiasi angolazione la guardi non c’è modo di toglierle gli occhi di dosso. E’ veramente raro trovare qualcuno che sia disposto a usare una macchina in queste condizioni sulle strade di tutti i giorni, figuriamoci a portarla in una stradina di campagna sterrata.

From every angle you look at it, there’s no way to keep your eyes off of it. It’s extremely rare to find someone that is willing to use his perfectly restore car on everyday roads, let alone bring it on a secondary country road.

Abbiamo “alzato  la gonnellina” per dare un occhio al motore, perché anche questo è ovviamente curato nei dettagli come il resto della macchina. Il piccolo 700cc, accoppiato a una trasmissione a 5 rapporti, produce 50cv e presenta anch’esso dettagli veramente notevoli, a partire dalla copertura, verniciata con un verde particolare, che Piero ci spiega essere il verde “ufficiale” della Toff Car.

We “lifted the skirt” to have a look at the engine, because of course this has been studied in all its detail as well like the rest of car. The small 700cc engine, mated to a 5 speed transmission, develops 50bhp and it has some very nice details, starting from the engine cover, painted with a particular green, the Piero tells us to be the “official” Toff Car green.

Il carburatore è un grosso Weber 40 DCOE e dai quei due tromboncini arriva un sound di aspirazione veramente stupendo.

The carburetor is a big Weber 40 DCOE and from those velocity stacks comes an glorious intake sound.

Anche se piccolo, c’è da perdere ore in quel vano motore alla ricerca di tutti i particolari che la rendono così perfetta.

Even if small, one can spend hours in that engine bay looking for all the details that make this car so perfect.

E parlando di particolari, sotto il cofano anteriore troviamo un pannello avvitato. Piero prende un cacciavite dalla macchina e una volta rimosso ci mostra quella che è una modifica creata da lui. Quel pannello serve infatti per l’ispezione rapida alla pompa dei freni! Semplicemente geniale.

And talking about the details, under the front hood we find a bolted panel. Piero takes a screwdriver from the car and once removed he shows us one of his useful mods. That panel in fact is for the quick inspection of the brake pump! Simply smart.

Ovviamente anche gli interni hanno ricevuto una buona dose di attenzioni. Le sedute sono state rivestite di pelle un bellissimo e intenso bordeaux per creare un magnifico contrasto con il grigio pastello della carrozzeria

Of course the interiors too have received a good dose of attentions. The seats have been covered in leather with a beautiful and intense bordeaux color to create a wonderful contrast with the pastel gray of the body

ed è possibile trovare indizi sui futuri progetti di Piero… i ganci per le cinture da corsa sono già installati!

and there are some hints on Piero’s future projects too… the rings for the racing harness have been already installed!

Il bello è che in questo fantastico restauro sono stati lasciati tutti i pezzi originali, quindi è possibile vedere la bellissima patina su gran parte di essi.

The good thing is that on this fantastic restoration all the original parts have been left on the car, so it’s possible to see the beautiful patina on most of them.

Come si fa a non innamorarsi di un “pocket rocket” come questo?

How can you not fall in love with such a “pocket rocket”?

Questa 695 ti mette di buon umore, tutti si girano a guardarla, strappa un sorriso a chiunque, dal ragazzo al signore di mezza età che la guarda incuriosita, ricordando i tempi in cui i “cinquini” invadevano le strade ma rimanendo stupito dalla larghezza, dal cofano posteriore aperto e dal sound decisamente fuori dal comune.

This 695 puts you in a good mood, everyone turn their head, everyone smile once they see it, from the guy to the mid-aged man that looks at it in a curious manner, remembering the times when the “cinquini” used to invade the streets but amazed by the width, the opened rear hood and by the uncommon sound.

Saremmo rimasti tutto il giorno a fotografare questo gioiellino e ad ascoltare aneddoti e particolarità da Piero che, oltre a essere un vero professionista nel suo mestiere, è soprattutto un Appassionato con la “A” maiuscola, ma ovviamente a un certo punto ci siamo dovuti salutare.

We would have stayed all day shooting this small jewel and listening to the various stories and particularities from Piero that, a part from being a very professional at his job, is especially an Enthusiast with the capital “E”, but of course at some point we had to say goodbye.

Per noi è stato un vero piacere conoscere meglio sia la macchina che la persona che c’è dietro di essa. Entrambe sono un vero simbolo della passione per le auto e per la cura dei dettagli e speriamo che qualcuno si senta abbastanza motivato da intraprendere un progetto simile.

It has been a real pleasure to know better both the car and the person behind it. Both are a true symbol of the passion for cars and for the attention to details and we hope that someone would feel motivated enough to start a project like this one.
