Il sogno di ogni appassionato di motorsport è quello di poter rivivere gli anni gloriosi almeno una volta nella vita. Che si tratti di F1, Sport Prototipi, Rally, Campionato Turismo o di un’altra disciplina poco importa, ogni forma di sport motoristico ha avuto una sua era di splendore, un periodo in cui le gesta dei piloti erano ancora in primo piano, in cui le meccaniche delle auto era sempre spinte al limite e in cui, inevitabilmente, lo spettacolo era il migliore di sempre.

The dream of every motorsports enthusiast is to be able to live the glorious years at least once in their life. Whether it’s F1, Sport Prototypes, Rally, Touring Championship or any other discipline it doesn’t matter, every form of motorsports has its own golden age, a period where the driver’s feats were still important, where the car’s mechanical components were always pushed to the limit and where, inevitably, the show was the best ever.

Ovviamente non è una facile impresa, gli anni passati sono ormai archiviati negli annali e i nuovi regolamenti, la crisi finanziaria mondiale e un settore come quello del motorsport sempre più in difficoltà rendono impossibile un ritorno alle origini. Per fortuna però esistono ancora degli eventi dedicati, chiamati “Revival”, il cui scopo è quello di far tornare a correre le auto più belle, potenti e affascinanti di sempre, spesso accompagnate anche da una guida “vecchio stile”, il tutto nel nome di quella passione che ci accomuna che si chiama motorsport.

This isn’t of course a simple task, the past years are now stored in the annals and the new regulations, the world economical crisis and a field like motorsport that is more and more in trouble make a comeback to the roots basically impossible. Luckily though there are still some dedicated events, called “Revival”, which purpose is to bring back to racing the most beautiful, powerful and fascinating cars of all times, often accompanied by an old school driving style too, all in the name of that passion that we share that is called motorsport.

Siamo partiti alla volta di Verona per assistere e potervi raccontare un evento che dal 2003 infiamma le stupende vallate della Lessinia, il Rally Revival Valpantena. Un’orgia motoristica da migliaia di cavalli complessivi, con 230 iscritti al via e alcune delle auto da rally più famose e iconiche della storia.

We left for Verona to witness and tell you an event that since 2003 excite the gorgeous Lessinia’s valleys, the Rally Revival Valpantena. A motoristic orgy with thousands of horsepower overall, with 230 entrants and some of the most famous and iconic rally cars of the history.

Ovviamente le più attese sono come sempre le mitiche Gruppo B, veri e propri mostri a 4 ruote che hanno dominato la scena sportiva motoristica dei primi anni ’80, con un seguito spesso superiore anche alla F1. Dire che hanno emozionato sarebbe riduttivo. Si riconoscono fin da lontano, il soffio della turbina, il tipico rumore del compressore volumetrico, la mostruosa accelerazione, ogni auto ha il suo sound caratteristico.

Of course the most awaited ones are the legendary Group B cars, real 4 wheels monsters that have dominated the motoristic scene in the 80s, with an appeal often even greater than F1. To say that they got the people excited would be an understatement. One can recognize them since far away, the blow of the turbine, the typical sound of the supercharger, the insane acceleration, every car has its own characteristic sound.

il cinque cilindri squarcia l’aria e all’improvviso si scorge l’inconfondibile sagoma che avanza divorando terra e asfalto a una velocità impressionante.

E poi le leggendarie livree Martini, quelle si che fanno impazzire tutti quanti. Nel mondo del rallysmo quei colori bianco/rosso/blu sono riconducibili solo a un costruttore, Lancia. Fin dai primi anni delle Gruppo B il costruttore di Torino ha adottato sulle sue 037 questa partnership con il produttore di bevande alcoliche Martini&Rossi, già presente nell’ambito del motorsport con altre case automobilistiche del calibro di Porsche e Brabham.

And then the legendary Martini linerie, those who make everyone goes crazy. In the rallying world those white/red/blue colours are related just to one manufacturer, Lancia. Since the first years of the Group B championship the Turin’s builder used on its 037 this partnership with the alcoholic beverage producer Martini&Rossi, already in the motorsports area with other manufacturers like Porsche and Brabham.

ma nella folta schiera di queste stupende auto (di sicuro tra le più belle auto da rally mai realizzate) erano presenti anche altre iconiche livree, come l’indimenticabile TOTIP.

But in the large group of these beautiful cars (for sure one of the most beautiful rally cars ever made) there were also other iconic liveries, like the unforgettable TOTIP.

 

Rimanendo in casa Lancia sono poi passati lungo le strette strade di collina anche i così detti “mostri sacri”… Ovviamente parliamo delle Delta S4!

To remain in the Lancia theme are then passed along the narrow streets of the hill also the so-called “mythical figures”… of course we’re talking about the Delta S4!

 

A parte il lato estetico che è della serie “o lo ami o lo odi”, il famoso sistema twincharged (dotata quindi di turbocompressore e compressore volumetrico) ti lascia di sasso la prima volta che lo senti dal vivo. Il motore sembra avere coppia e potenza all’infinito, la velocità con cui esce dalle curve è quasi imbarazzante e la velocità del cambio di direzione fa impallidire anche le moderne supercar.

Besides the aesthetic side that is pretty much “love it or hate it”, the famous twincharged system (equipped with both a turbocharger and a supercharger) leaves you stunned the first time you hear it in person. The engine seems to have an endless amount of power and torque, the speed that carries out of the corner is almost embarrassing and the speed of the direction changes makes turn pale even the modern supercars.

 

Sullo sterrato, nonostante siano modelli dal costo esorbitante (parliamo di cifre a 5 zeri), c’è anche chi preme sull’acceleratore senza timore, regalando docce di polvere e sassi agli spettatori a bordo strada. Questa stupenda “Grifone Oro” era sicuramente una di quelle guidate con più cattiveria e ve la potete immaginare con la minacciosa livrea nero e oro mentre cerca disperatamente grip nello scaricare a terra i 500+ cavalli sviluppati dal piccolo 1.8L!

On the tarmac, despite being super expensive models (we’re talking about 5-zeros numbers), there is also who pushes on the throttle with no fear, giving showers of dust and rocks to the spectators on the side of the road. This amazing “Grifone Oro” was without any doubts one of those driven with more wickedness and you can imagine it with the menacing gold and black livery while it tries desperately to find some grip while trying to put to the ground the 500+ horsepowers developed by the small 1.8L engine!

E per completare la lista delle “big” presenti al Valpantena, una piacevolissima e rara sorpresa: la stupenda Peugeot 205 Turbo16, completa di tutti i profili alari in configurazione Evo2.

And to complete the list of the “big” ones attending the Valpantena, a pleasant and rare surprise: the gorgeous Peugeot 205 Turbo16 in Evo2 spec with all the full-wing package.

 

Compatta e tecnicamente micidiale questa macchina nel 1985 vinse a mani basse il campionato costruttori conquistando 7 vittorie su 10 gare e avere l’opportunità di vedere in azione una macchina così vittoriosa non ha veramente prezzo.

Very compact and technically impeccable, this car in 1985 won hands down the manufacturer’s championship winning 7 of 10 races and being able to see this multiple winning car in action is really priceless.

 

Un’auto decisamente rara e insolita è poi apparsa lungo il percorso. Si tratta di una Nissan 240 RS, chicca nipponica che al Valpantena ha sfoggiato quella linea particolare, con i passaruota squadrati tipicamente anni ’80 e quegli stupendi fari in stile safari a farsi largo al crepuscolo in mezzo alla fitta polvere della prova speciale.

And then a definitely rare and unusual car popped out on the course. We’re talking about a Nissan 240 RS, Nipponese gem that at the Valpantena showed off that particular line, with the typical box shaped flares of the 80s and those amazing safari-style headlamps making its way at dusk between the thick layer of dust of the special stage.

 

E sempre in tema Giapponese, una fantastica Datsun 240Z, iconica coupè del sol levante ormai quasi impossibile da vedere in configurazione da rally.

And to remain in the Japanese theme, a wonderful Datsun 240Z, iconc coupè of the rising sun land, now almost impossible to see in rally configuration.

 

Ovviamente a dare spettacolo con traversi infiniti c’erano anche altre auto a trazione posteriore. E che spettacolo! I BMW M3 E30 spingevano praticamente tutti come se non ci fosse un domani, dando vita a una vera danza tra le curve

per finire con le più piccole del Revival, come questa bellissima Fiat 127

e la leggendaria Mini, che nonostante le dimensioni ridotte vanta vittorie importanti nelle competizioni passate, tra cui anche un Rally di Montecarlo.

Ma il Valpantena non è solo un rally, è una vera e propria esperienza. Le sensazioni che regala questo evento sono fortissime, dall’esperienza nel vedere arrivare i fari nel buio più totale,

con le auto che illuminano e disegnano il percorso nella vallata,

with the cars that light up and draw the course in the valley,

 

al passaggio delle vetture in mezzo ai paesi, con scene che riportano indietro nel tempo per un attimo, che fanno tornare alla memoria un glorioso passato fatto di spettacolo, passione e prestigio.

Insomma, questa è una rievocazione storica con i fiocchi, organizzata da appassionati per gli appassionati, con auto che hanno scritto la storia di questo sport che percorrono strade stupende in un bellissimo scenario come quello della Lessinia.

In short, this is an excellent historical commemoration, organized by enthusiasts for the enthusiasts, with cars that made the history of this sport that run through gorgeous roads in a fantastic scenario like the one of the Lessinia.

Probabilmente penserete che è esagerato dire che una delle esperienza più belle che possono capitare a un petrolhead è una bella doccia di sassi e polvere causata da un mostro Gruppo B… ma la verità è proprio questa, una volta provata, non ne potrete fare a meno.

You’d probably think that is an exaggeration to say that one of the most beautiful experience that can happen to a petrolhead is a nice shower made of rocks and dust caused by a Group B monster… but the truth is this one, once tried, you cannot do without it.
