Che giornata… che situazione strana e difficilmente descrivibile… trovarsi faccia a faccia con qualcuno che la storia della F1 l’ha fatta e rimanere scioccato dalla rilassatezza e dalla disponibilità di tutti quanti è qualcosa di veramente raro. Ad accoglierci a Monza in una tiepida giornata di Novembre, la mitica Tyrrell 006 con cui il leggendario Sir Jackie Stewart ha vinto il campionato del mondo nel 1973.

What a day… what a weird and difficult to describe situation… finding yourself face to face with someone who really wrote the history of the F1 and remaining shocked by the looseness and availability of everyone is something very rare. To welcome us in Monza in a warm November day, the mythical Tyrrell 006 with which the legendary Sir Jackie Stewart won the world championship in 1973.

E ancora stentiamo a crederci ma era presente anche lui, lo “Scozzese volante” in persona! Il suo inconfondibile casco bianco con striscia a trama scozzese ci ha accolto in un quasi desolato box.

And we’re still find it hard to believe but he was there aswell, the “Flying Scots” himself! His unmistakable white helmet with the scottish texture stripe on it welcomed us in an almost empty box.

Sapevamo che la BBC lo aveva convocato per girare del materiale video e ci aspettavamo di essere sbattuti fuori da un momento all’altro ma ci sbagliavamo di grosso. L’ambiente era calmo, la gente disponibile e noi, ovviamente, ne abbiamo approfittato. Appena l’auto si è messa in moto ci siamo diretti in pit lane e come per magia per un attimo è stato come tornare indietro nel tempo.

We knew that the BBC had called him to take some video material and we were expecting to be kicked out in a few moments but we were wrong. The ambient was very relaxed, the people were nice and of course we took advantage of it. As soon as the car was fired up we went on the pit lane and magically for a moment it has been like going back in time.

Vedere sfrecciare la Tyrrell in una Monza desolata è semplicemente indescrivibile.

Looking at the Tyrrell blasting in a desolate Monza is simply indescribable.

Dopo un paio di giri, il rientro ai box. Il colpo d’occhio è ancora una volta di quelli che ti lasciano a bocca aperta.

After a couple of laps, the return in the box. The sight is another time breath taking.

Approfittiamo del momento per spostarci lungo la pista. E per la prima volta ci troviamo in una parte inesplorata del tracciato. La vecchia “Junior” è una lingua di asfalto che unisce il rettilineo principale con l’uscita della Ascari e ovviamente, non essendo più utilizzata, è priva di cordoli e vie di fuga. Lo scenario è semplicemente stupendo e vedersi sfrecciare lo Scozzese volante a pochi centimetri dalla faccia è incredibile.

We took advantage to move on into the track. And for the first time we found ourself in an unexplored part of the Autodromo. The old “Junior” is a stripe on tarmac that join the main straight to the exit of the Ascari and of course, not being used anymore, is lacking of kerbs and gravel traps. The scenario is amazing and looking at the Flying Scot flying by just a few inches from your face is incredible.

La Ascari ha favorito come sempre uno scatto suggestivo.

Di ritorno ai box ci siamo accorti che per le riprese c’è stato un cambio di pilota e una felice controfigura si è messa al volante della Tyrrell.

Back in the box we noticed that for the filming a driver change was going on and a rather happy body double was behind the wheel of the Tyrrell.

L’espressione di Sir Jackie Stewart mentre l’auto lascia la pit lane è un mix di felicità, soddisfazione e malinconia.

The expression on the face of Sir Jackie Stewart while the car is leaving the pit lane is a mix of happiness, satisfaction and melancholy.

Con ancora poca luce a disposizione siamo andati a fare gli ultimi scatti e nonostante l’attrezzatura video montata sulla macchina le foto trasudano di sentimenti vecchia scuola.

With still a bit of light available we went to snap the latest photos and despite the camera gear on the car the images ooze with old school feelings.

Dopo un’attesa interminabile e con il buio ormai calato sull’Autodromo il box si apre di nuovo e a darci il benvenuto un sorridente e accogliente Sir Stewart.

After an endless wait and with the dark now dropped on the Autodromo the box was opened again and welcoming us a smiling and friendly Sir Stewart.

Quest’uomo è una leggenda sia dentro che fuori la pista. Grazie al suo impegno la sicurezza in pista è migliorata drasticamente dopo il suo ritiro e tutto quello che ha fatto ha sicuramente salvato parecchie vite.

This man is a legend both in and outside the track. Thanks to his efforts, the safety on the race tracks has been significantly improved after his retirement and all the things he did have saved many lives for sure.

Giusto prima di essere accompagnati fuori dalla crew della BBC ci siamo presi un attimo per dare un ultimo sguardo da vicino alla macchina.

Just a few moments before being brought out from the BBC crew we took a moment to have a close look to the car.

Quel mitico numero 3,

il potente V8 da 12000 giri al minuto che garantisce la potenza necessaria a spingere gli appena 578kg della macchina

e il cockpit che è ciò che di più spartano ti puoi trovare su una F1.

and a cockpit that is absolutely essential for an F1 car.

Che auto incredibile, una vera icona dell’automobilismo. Sarà impossibile dimenticare questo incontro con una leggenda vivente come Sir Jackie Stewart e siamo grati a tutta la crew della BBC per averci dato la possibilità di catturare gli istanti di questa splendida giornata.
