17,3 Km di asfalto, 40 tornanti e un dislivello di 1.350 metri. La chiamano “l’Università delle salite” ed è la cronoscalata più lunga d’Europa. E’ la leggendaria Trento-Bondone, una gara di resistenza, di tecnica, di velocità e di concentrazione. In questa prova valida per lo European Hill-Climb Championship e per il Campionato Italiano Velocità Montagna sia i piloti che le macchine sono messe a dura prova e quest’anno a complicare le cose c’è stato un sole feroce che la Domenica ha sfiorato i 42°! Per qualsiasi appassionato di velocità questa gara è imperdibile, la quantità e la varietà di auto schierate è incredibile e ora ve ne daremo la dimostrazione.

17.3 Kms of tarmac, 40 hairpins and a difference in altitude of 1.350 meters. It’s called the “Università delle salite” (the University of hillclimbs) and it’s the longest hillclimb in Europe. It’s the legendary Trento-Bondone, a race made of resistance, technique, speed and concentration. In this race good for the European Hill-Climb Championship and for the Campionato Italiano Velocità Montagna both drivers and cars have been strained to the limit and this year, to complicate a bit more the game, a fierce sun shined during the weekend, going till 42° on Sunday! For every petrolhead this race is unmissable, the number and the variety of cars lined up is incredible and now we’re going to prove it.

Questa 62esima edizione è stata dominata per il terzo anno di fila dal grande Simone Faggioli con la sua stupenda Osella FA30 Zytek, che è salito in cima al monte Bondone in 9:25.69, a soli 2 secondi dal record dell’anno scorso.

This 62nd edition has been dominated for the third year in a row by the great Simone Faggioli with his beautiful Osella FA30 Zytek, that climbed the mount Bondone in 9:25.69, just 2 seconds slower than his record made last year.

e con grande sorpresa al terzo posto, tra i mostri da salita, Christian Merli con la piccola Radical 1600! Il 3000cc Zytek produce quasi 500 cavalli, mentre la Radical di Merli appena 250… attributi di acciaio?!

Oltre alla doverosa menzione dei vincitori della classe regina, quella dei prototipi, ora cercheremo di mostrarvi il meglio delle auto che hanno affrontato la salita, le più diverse categorie, dalle ruote scoperte, alle GT, dalle auto storiche a quelle che la storia l’hanno scritta. Vorremmo poterle elencare tutte quante, ma è impossibile incastrare più di 230 auto in un articolo, quindi faremo del nostro meglio per mostrarvi la crème della crème dell’evento.

Besides the dutiful mention of the winners of the premier class, the one of the prototypes, now we’ll try to show you the best of the cars that climbed the mountain, the most different categories, from the open wheelers, to the GTs, from the historic cars to those who have written the history. We would like to list all of them, but it’s impossible for us to put more than 230 cars in a report, so we’ll try our best to show you the crème de la crème of the event.

Le strade di montagna non sono esattamente il luogo dove ci si aspetterebbe di vedere un monoposto come questa Lola Zytek di Adolfo Bottura, e gli scorci di bosco ci hanno regalato scene indimenticabili.

The streets of a mountain are not exactly the place where you would expect to see a single seater like this Lola Zytek of Adolfo Bottura, and the patches of forest gave us some unforgettable scenes.

Alla Trento-Bondone persino le GT da pista hanno affrontato la salita e anche qui, come nei più famosi autodromi Europei, Autorlando con la sua Porsche 997 GT3R si è piazzata davanti alle altre vetture GT3

come la Dodge Viper di Bigoni, eccessivamente grossa e con evidenti problemi di trazione.

Chi non aveva problemi di trazione erano sicuramente le WRC e lo spettacolare Giorgio de Tisi al volante della Citroen Xsara si è aggiudicato la classe A3000+.

Those who hadn’t problems were for sure the WRC cars and the spectacular Giorgio de Tisi, at the wheel of the Citroen Xsara won the A3000+ class.

Tra le piccole hatchback uno dei passaggi più incredibili è stato quello di questa Honda Civic Type-R, che infatti ha fatto il miglior piazzamento di categoria.

Among the small hatchback one of the most incredible passage has been the one of this Honda Civic Type-R, that in fact won its class.

Sui tornanti le piccole 3 porte erano bellissime da vedere, con le ruote interne posteriori che si alzavano e staccate a ruote fumanti!

On the hairpins the small 3 doors cars were really nice to be seen, with the inside rear wheels lifted and the smoke coming out from the wheels while braking!

Auto come le Alfa 147 non si vedono spesso in pista, figuriamoci in una cronoscalata

Cars like the Alfa 147 are not a common sight on a race track, let alone in a hillclimb

mentre invece le varie Lancer Evo erano sul loro territorio ideale. La Evo IX di Maurizio Pioner ha infatti vinto la classe N3000+.

while the various Lancer Evos were in their comfort zone. The Evo IX of Maurizio Pioner has won in fact the N3000+ class.

Lasciando perdere un attimo le classi, diamo un occhio alle auto più belle, particolari e spettacolari dell’evento. Le macchine si sentivano arrivare da fondo valle e come ben sapete ce ne sono alcune hanno un sound semplicemente inconfondibile. Il 6 cilindri boxer delle Porsche per esempio ha una nota stupenda e vi lasciamo immaginare come cantava questa cattiva Porsche 934/S… a vederla sembrava un ufo!

Leaving aside for a moment the classes, let’s give a look at the most beautiful, particular and spectacuar cars of the event. The machines could be heard coming from down the valley and as you may know there are some that have a simply unmistakable sound. The 6 cylinders boxer of the Porsches for example have a wonderful tone and we leave you to imagine how was singing this mean Porsche 934/S… it was looking like a UFO!

Un altro sound decisamente particolare? Sicuramente quello di un altro motore 6 cilindri, questa volta però disposti a V con un angolo di 60° tra le bancate e con il limitatore fissato a 11.800 giri al minuto… stiamo parlando di sua maestà Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI. Non so in quanti hanno avuto la possibilità di vederla girare in pista, figuriamoci vederla sfrecciare su una lingua di asfalto in mezzo ai boschi!

Another definitely particular sound? For sure the one of another 6 cylinder engine, but this time with a V scheme and with an angle of 60° between the cylinder banks and with the rev limiter setted and 11.800 rpm… we’re talking about her majesty the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI. I don’t know how many people have had a chance to see it on a race track, let alone see it blasting on strip of tarmac between the trees!

Questa bellezza, guidata alla vittoria di classe E1 dal pilota Marco Gramenzi, è una ex-Tarquini e a ogni passaggio anche le persone più indifferenti giravano la testa e rimanevano a bocca aperta. I 420 cavalli scaricati dalla trazione integrale potevano quasi sbriciolare l’asfalto e ancora adesso, a giorni di distanza, sentiamo l’eco del V6 nelle nostre teste.

This beauty, driven to victory of the E1 class from the driver Marco Gramenzi, is an ex-Tarquini and at every passage even the most indifferent people turned their heads with theit jaw dropped. The 420 bhp delivered to the gruond by the 4 wheels drive system could almost crumble the tarmac and even now, days after the event, we can still hear the echo of the V6 in our heads.

Un’altra esperienza incredibile è stata quella di vedere il DTM ex-Kasparek correre fino in cima al monte. L’Audi WTT-R DTM del simpatico pilota Ceco Vladimir “Vlada” Vitver è uno splendore, sound, linea e livrea sono spettacolari e speriamo di rivederla al più presto!

Another great experience has been the one of seeing the ex-Kasparek DTM racing till the top of the mountain. The Audi WTT-R DTM of the friendly Czech driver Vladimir “Vlada” Vitver is absolutely fantastic, sound, lines and livery are brilliant and we hope to see it again as soon as possible!

C’erano poi alcune auto in pieno stile Berg Cup, come la splendida Fiat 127 di Canio Marchione. Il piccolo motore 1.4 è veramente spinto al limite e come si può dedurre dai passaruota allargati non è un’auto da definire “tranquilla”! Leggerezza e tenuta rendono questa 127 una vera arma da salita.

There were also some cars in Berg Cup style, like the awesome Fiat 127 of Canio Marchione. The small 1.4 engine is really pushed to the limit and as you can assume by the wide fenders it’s not really a “calm” car! Lightness and grip make this 127 a true hillclimb weapon.

Stesso discorso vale per la bellissima Golf Spiess 16v, auto veramente aggressiva anche lei completamente allargata e con deportanze aerodinamiche che la aiutavano a trovare il grip giusto a ogni curva. Queste auto da Berg Cup sono proprio stupende e la filosofia della leggerezza è veramente da ammirare in un mondo dominato dall’oversizing.

Same goes for the beautiful Golf Spiess 16v, a really aggressive car with a full widebody kit and with aero components that helped it to find the right grip in every corner. These Berg Cup cars are really nice and the philosophy of the lightness is admirable in a world dominated by oversizing.

La famosa Lancia Delta Evo di Fulvio Giuliani è un mostro a 4 ruote motrici… i circa 600 cavalli gli hanno assicurato la seconda piazza di classe E1 e già al passaggio della prima prova del Sabato siamo rimasti scioccati dalla trazione di questa macchina!

The famous Lancia Delta Evo of Fulvio Giuliani is a 4 wheels drive monster… the about 600 bhp ensured to the driver the second place in the E1 class and since the passage in the first qualifying session of Saturday we were stunned by the traction of this car!

Tra le auto storiche c’erano delle vere chicche, a partire dalle piccole Steyr Puch 650 TR che nonostante la poca cavalleria del motore salivano con grinta per i tornanti,

Among the historic cars there were some true gems, starting with the small Steyr Puch 650 TR that despite the low power of the engine were climbing up the hill with determination,

fino ad arrivare a qualcosa di decisamente più performante come la March 712 M F2!

to arrive till something definitely more performing like the March 712 M F2!

Ovviamente la lista degli iscritti anche qui era veramente lunga e una delle auto più particolari era sicuramente la Skoda 130 RS di Petr Dlochy.

Of course also this time the list of the entrants was really long and one of the most particular cars was for sure the Skoda 130 RS of Petr Dlochy.

Non mancavano le leggende del rallysmo, come una stupenda e immacolata Ford Escort 1800 RS Mk1

Insomma, lo spettacolo e le belle auto non sono di certo mancate nemmeno quest’anno sul mitico monte Bondone e noi non vediamo l’ora di poter tornare ad assistere a un evento di questa portata, anche se di “Università delle salite” ce n’è una sola e si chiama Trento-Bondone!

So, the show and the great cars were there as every year on the mount Bondone and we can’t wait to be able to go back to see another big event like this one, even if the “Università della salita” is just one and it’s called Trento-Bondone!
