WRC Rally Italia Sardegna 2017: Heat In The Dust

Il sole è ancora basso, l’occhio è strizzato nel mirino della macchina fotografica e i sensi sono in allerta. Ormai ci siamo, è solo questione di pochi secondi. Finalmente ecco l’inconfondibile suono dell’elicottero che segue le auto. Tutto si svolge in un attimo. La Hyundai si tuffa nel discesone sollevando una coltre di polvere densa, densissima. Nonostante sia concentrato nello scattare, riesco comunque a godermi il grandioso spettacolo attraverso il teleobiettivo, dentro l’azione. Per un attimo il muso dell’auto scompare nella polvere ma ormai è già di traverso e proiettata verso la curva successiva. Gli attimi che seguono hanno un che di irreale: non si avverte più alcun suono e l’ambiente circostante è avvolto dalla polvere, costringendomi ad una prolungata apnea. Ho caldo e non posso respirare, ma non vorrei essere da nessun’altra parte. Benvenuti alla edizione 2017 della tappa italiana del campionato mondiale rally.

The sun is still low, the eye is squeezed in the viewfinder of the camera and the senses are on the alert. It’s almost the time, it’s just a matter of seconds. Finally the unmistakable noise of the helicopter that follows the cars. Everything lasts only a few moments. The Hyundai dives into the downhill by lifting a thick wave of dust, extremely thick indeed. Despite the fact that I’m concentrated into shooting the action, I can still enjoy the great show through the viewfinder, inside the action. For a moment the front end of the car disappears into the dust but it’s now already sideways, pointing towards the next corner. The following moments are almost unreal: no sound is heard anymore and the surroundings are wrapped in dust, forcing me to a long apnea. I’m hot and I can’t breathe, but I would not want to be anywhere else. Welcome to the 2017 edition of the Italian round of the World Rally Championship.
