Hirundo

Non è facile sgusciare fuori dal letto alle 3 del mattino e attraversare la notte al volante della propria auto, ma quando ad attenderti c’è la sfida, la stanchezza scivola via insieme ai km che si accumulano.

It’s never easy to wriggle out of bed at 3 a.m. and go through the night driving your own car, but when there is “the challenge” waiting you, the tiredness fades away together with the kms that build up.

Un rally è un rally: c’è chi va forte, chi perde secondi dopo secondi, chi sbatte. Ma tutti hanno in comune la stessa cosa: la sfida contro il cronometro e contro il percorso. Già, il percorso. Duro, ostile, polveroso e caldo. Vai più veloce di tutti e hai vinto la corsa; riesci ad arrivare al traguardo con la macchina quasi intera e hai comunque vinto la sfida, il binomio auto/pilota, anzi, acceleratore/cuore, ha avuto la meglio sulla strada.

Ormai l’alba è prossima, arrivo al percorso con i primi tiepidi raggi di sole che illuminano di fantastica luce arancione i monti e le pale eoliche. Avvolto dal profumo inebriante della macchia mediterranea, resto per più di qualche secondo sopraffatto dalla bellezza del paesaggio intorno a me.

Ci siamo. Che la sfida abbia inizio.

A rally is a rally: there are those who go fast, those who lose seconds after seconds, those who crash. But they all have the same thing in common: “the challenge” against the stop watch and against the route. Yea, the route. Tough, hostile, dusty and hot. You go quicker than everyone and you’ve win the race; you manage to cut the finish line with the car almost all in one piece and you still have win “the challenge”, the combination car/driver, or rather throttle/heart, got the better on the road.

Now the dawn is near, I arrive on the course with the first warm rays of the sun which enlightens with a gorgeous orange light all the mountains and the wind turbines. Wrapped by the heady scent of the Mediterranean maquis, I remain overwhelmed for more than a few seconds by the beauty of the surroundings.

Here we are. Let “the challenge” begins.
