2013 Nurburgring 24H – Dream It, Breathe It, Live It

25.378 metri di asfalto che si snodano tra le fitte foreste dell’Eifel, in Germania, 173 auto in griglia di partenza e il brivido della “prima volta” al cospetto di una delle piste più famose al mondo.

25.378 meters of tarmac which run through the Eifel forests, in Germany, 173 cars on the starting grid and the thrill of the “first time” in the presence of one of the most famous racing tracks in the world.

Armati di attrezzatura fotografica, coperture per la pioggia (fondamentali) e vestiti di ricambio per un esercito intero, siamo partiti per un viaggio in macchina lungo più di 800km attraverso l’Europa centrale. Gli splendidi panorami della Svizzera hanno alleviato i pedanti limiti di velocità di 100km/h ma appena abbiamo superato la frontiera siamo decollati verso la Germania, direzione Nürburg.

Armed with our photographic gear, rain covers (fundamental) and spare clothes for an entire army, we went on a road trip of more than 800km through the central Europe. The wonderful Swiss panorama has alleviated the annoying 100km/h speed limits but as soon as we crossed the border we flew to Germany, direction Nürburg.

Non ci sono parole per descrivere l’emozione che abbiamo provato nel vedere il primo cartello con la scritta “Nürburgring”. L’adrenalina ha iniziato a scorrere a fiumi e così la nostra avventura al Green Hell è ufficialmente iniziata.

There are no words to describe the emotion that we felt the first time we spotted a road sign with the writing “Nürburgring”. The adrenaline has started to flow and so our adventure to the Green Hell was officially started.

Scaricati i bagagli, siamo andati subito in ricognizione per vedere il mitico tracciato. Essendo la prima volta che andavamo in questo luogo magico, due sono state le cose che ci hanno colto di sorpresa: la difficoltà nel raggiungere certi posti e i cambi di pendenza. Altro che videogames, da una curva all’altra la pista sale o scende in picchiata, i cordoli sono altissimi e la carreggiata è veramente stretta.

Luggage unloaded, we went straight to see the legendary race track. Being our first time in this magic place, two were the things that cought us by surprise: how hard it is to reach some places and the elevation changes. Not your average videogame experience, from one corner to the other the track goes up or swoops down, the kerbs are really high and the track is super narrow.

Dopo esserci fatti una prima idea di quello che avremmo potuto vedere nei giorni successivi siamo andati verso i box, dove troviamo la pioggia ad aspettarci.

After having made a first idea of what we could expect from the next days we went to the pits area, where we found the rain waiting for us.

Oltre alle auto si intravedono anche i primi volti noti, come quello dell’Olandese Yelmer Buurman del team MarcVDS

A part from the cars we’ve also spotted the first familiar faces, like the one of the Dutch Yelmer Buurman of the MarcVDS racing team

e quello del presidente Toyota Akio Toyoda, uno dei quattro piloti della Lexus LFA Gazoo Racing.

And the one of the Toyota president Akio Toyoda, one of the four drivers of the Gazoo Racing Lexus LFA.

Sempre parlando di gente importante, un’altra persona famosa per le sue battaglie per la salvaguardia del circuito del Nurburgring Nordschleife e di conseguenza di tutte le attività locali che ci girano intorno, è il Tedesco Mike Frison (a sinistra nella foto). Abbiamo avuto il piacere di incontrarlo e di fare due chiacchere con lui riguardo la situazione attuale. Come alcuni già sapranno purtroppo il circuito è stato messo da poco in vendita.

Still talking about important people, another famous person thanks to his fights for the safeguard of the Nurburgring Nordschleife race track and consequently of all the local activities that revolve around it, id the German Mike Frison (on the left in the picture). We had the pleasure to meet him and to have a chat with him about the actual situation. As someone may already know, unfortunately the track is now on sale.

L’associazione fondata da Mike, “Save The Ring“, è ormai diventata famosa in tutto il mondo e si sono visti innumerevoli adesivi, volantini e striscioni di supporto per tutto il weekend. The association founded by Mike, “Save The Ring“, is now famous all over the world and we have seen countless stickers, flyers and banners supporting the cause for the whole weekend. Il Venerdì è il giorno del primo assaggio della pista con le prove libere notturne e dalla folle postazione foto alla base del Flugplatz (eravamo davanti alle barriere a mezzo metro dalle auto) assistiamo a uno spettacolo incredibile.

Friday is the day of the first taste of the race track with the free qualifying night session and from the crazy shooting spot located at the base of the Flugplatz (we were in fron of the barriers just half meter away from the cars) we witness to an amazing show.

La salita sembra un vero muro di asfalto

e questo è quello che succede quando le auto più veloci si trovano a dover effettuare un sorpasso proprio in quel punto…

and this is what happen when the fastest cars need to overtake someone in that precise point…

La notte cala in fretta e la tipica nebbiolina dell’Eifel inizia a salire.

The night falls quickly and the typical Eifel fog starts to come.

Assistere al passaggio delle auto nel buio totale e con l’eco dei motori nelle vallate è qualcosa che non ha prezzo e il ponte di Aremberg con la foresta che si illumina è senza dubbio la scena più mozzafiato della serata.

Staring at the cars flying by in the complete darkness and with the echo of the engines in the valley is something priceless and the Aremberg bridge with the forest that lights up is for sure the most breathtaking scene of the whole night.

Il Sabato ci accoglie con un bel sole, decisamente atipico considerata la quantità di acqua caduta nei giorni precedenti. Protagonisti di giornata gli equipaggi delle Top 40.

Saturday welcomes us with a nice sun, definitely strange considering the amount of rain that came down the days before. Protagonists of the day the crews of the Top 40.

Con 50 minuti a disposizione questa sessione di qualifiche stabilisce chi partirà in pole position la Domenica e già al primo passaggio si nota tutta l’aggressività dei piloti che saltano letteralmente sopra i cordoli

With 50 minutes at disposal, this qualifying session establishes who will start the race on pole position on Sunday and starting from the very first lap it was really notable all the aggressiveness of the drivers that literally jump on the kerbs

e, specialmente le Mercedes SLS, grattano violentemente il sotto scocca delle auto creando nuvole di scintille

and, especially the Mercedes SLSs, violently scratch the under chassis of the cars creating clouds of sparks

che scaldano alla grande il pubblico di festanti Tedeschi arroccati sui classici spalti fai-da-te.

which light up the crowd of cheering Germans perched on the classic DIY stands.

Alla fine il miglior tempo lo ha staccato l’Audi R8 GT3 del Team Phoenix con un incredibile 8m 17.212s, lasciando a intendere che la vittoria del 2012 non era stata casuale.

At the end the best time has been done by the Audi R8 GT3 of the Phoenix Team with an incredible 8m 17.212s, implying that the 2012 victory wasn’t a random occasion.

La nostra giornata si conclude con un giro nel paddock, dove abbiamo avuto la fortuna di fare due incontri decisamente piacevoli. Il primo con la leggenda del Nurburgring che porta il nome di Sabine Schmitz

Our day ends with a walk in the paddock, where we were lucky enough to do two very pleasant meetings. The first one with the Nurburgring legend which bears the name of Sabine Schmitz

e il secondo con la bella e sorridente pilota Svizzera Cyndie Alleman, presente alla 24h al volante di una SLK 350.

And the second one with the beautiful and smiling Swiss driver Cyndie Alleman, at the 24h race behind the wheel of an SLK 350.

Dopo qualche ora di sonno ci risvegliamo consapevoli del fatto che la notte successiva sarebbe stata lunga e umida, in quanto le previsioni meteo insistevano da diversi giorni dando pioggia sia per Domenica che per Lunedì. Ma fortunatamente il meteo dell’Eifel è imprevedibile per tutti quanti e ci ritroviamo nel primo pomeriggio di Domenica, a poche ore dalla gara, con qualche nuvola minacciosa in cielo ma pur sempre senza pioggia.

After a sleep of just a few hours we wake up again knowing that the night after would have been long a humid, because the weather forecasts were insisting since the days before giving rain for both Sunday and Monday. But luckily the weather of the Eifel is unpredictable for everyone and we found ourself in the first afternoon of Sunday, just a few hours away from the race, with some menacing coulds in the sky but still without rain.

Prima dell’inizio della gara, un grande “evento mediatico”, il ritorno di Michael Schumacher al volante di una F1. No, non per correre nel mondiale, ma per fare un giro completo del Nordschleife a bordo della sua Mercedes W02.

Before the race, a big “mediatic event”, the return of Michael Schumacher behind the wheel of an F1 car. No, not to compete in the world championship, but to make a complete lap of the Nordschleife with his Mercedes W02.

Vederlo apparire e scomparire in un attimo dietro le pendenze del “Ring” ha lasciato un misto di adrenalina e di delusione. Se solo avesse fatto qualche giro in più…

Looking at him appearing and disappearing behind the slopes of the “Ring” in a matter of a few seconds left us with a mix of adrenaline and disappointment. If only he would have done a couple more laps…

Come antipasto per la gara è stato comunque delizioso e a questo punto è stata una questione di poco tempo prima di sentire arrivare la prima ondata di GT3 da lontano. Le auto compaiono raggruppate da dietro la curva, la 24h del Nurburgring 2013 era finalmente iniziata.

As appetizer for the race it has been however delicious and at this point is has been a matter of a few time before hearing the first wave of GT3 coming from the distance. The cars appear in group from behind the corner, the 2013 Nurburgring 24h had finally begun.

Tra i partecipanti alla bagarre dei primi giri anche Kazunori Yamauchi, produttore della serie Gran Turismo, a bordo della cattivissima Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3

Among the entrants of the first laps fights, Kazunori Yamauchi, producer of the Gran Turismo series, driving the menacing Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3

e nelle categorie inferiori la mitica Opel Manta “Fox tail”, con un equipaggio di veterani della pista che si scambiavano alla guida.

And in the lower categories the legendary Opel Manta “Fox tail” with a crew of veterans of the race track sharing the car.

Decidiamo di spostarci più a ridosso del media center, in quanto le nuvole stavano diventando sempre più minacciose. Prossima fermata, uno dei punti più famosi del Green Hell, il Flugplatz. Se il giorno prima lo avevamo visto da sotto, non potevamo tirarci indietro nel vedere dall’alto l’effetto che questo scollinamento può avere sulle auto. Come da copione, le potenti GT3 alzavano le ruote da terra

We decide to move closer to the media center, because the clouds were more and more menacing. Next stop, one of the most famous spots of the whole Green Hell, the Flugplatz. If the day before we saw it from below, we couldn’t help ourself but look at it also from the top and notice the effect that this hill can have on the cars. As expected, the powerful GT3 cars were lifting the wheels from the ground

alcune addirittura prendevano proprio il volo, staccandosi completamente dall’asfalto.

some of them litterally took flight, lifting completely the car from the tarmac.

La luce inizia a calare e gli scarichi roventi si illuminano come palle di fuoco.

The light starts to drop and the hot exhausts light up as fire balls.

Poi, nel giro di pochi minuti, le prime gocce di pioggia iniziano a cadere… e nel giro di altrettanti pochi minuti quelle che erano solo delle gocce di pioggia diventano all’improvviso un acquazzone.

Then, in a matter of minutes, the first drops of rain start to come down… and in a matter of another couple of minutes what were just a few rain drops became suddenly a rain storm.

Semplicemente impossibile andare avanti in quella maniera, con la visibilità ridotta quasi a zero e con le auto che perdevano il controllo a 60kmh a causa della massiccia quantità di acqua che inondava la pista. Ore 22:40, la gara viene sospesa.

Simply impossible to go on in those poor conditions, with the visibility reduced almost to nothing and with the cars that were losing the control at 60kmh because of the massive amount of water on the track. 22:40, the race is suspended.

Andiamo in sala stampa ad asciugarci e a capire cosa sarebbe accaduto nelle ore successive, nessuna notizia fino alle tre passate del mattino quando viene annunciato che l’endurance sarebbe ripartita alle 8:20 del mattino e a quel punto decidiamo di andare a riposarci in macchina per un paio d’ore. Anche i team ne hanno ovviamente approfittato per schiacciare un sonnellino

We head over to the press room to dry ourself and to understand what would have happened in the next hours, no news until the three in the morning when it is announced that the endurance would start again at 8:20 in the morning and at that point we decided to take a small sleep in our car for a couple of hours. Also the teams of course took the occasion to take a quick nap

e per scaricare momentaneamente la tensione.

and to temporarily relieve the tension.

Appena torna la luce ci dirigiamo di nuovo a bordo pista per la ripartenza, sempre sotto la pioggia.

As soon as the light come back we move again behind the fences for the restart, still under the rain.

e le cicatrici del giorno prima iniziano a vedersi bene sulle auto.

and the scars from the day before start to show up clearly on the cars.

Per fortuna il tempo inizia a migliorare e la pista lentamente si inizia ad asciugare.

Luckily the weather starts to get better and the race track slowly starts to dry out.

Decidiamo di andare verso la curva più iconica della pista, il Karussell, e ci troviamo davanti a uno spettacolo incredibile. Le auto in ingresso rimangono con la ruota interna in sospensione per un attimo

We decided to go towards the most iconic corner of the race track, the Karussell, and we found ourself in front of an amazing show. The cars coming in remain with the inside wheel lifted in the air for a moment

e in uscita saltano letteralmente fuori dalle lastre di cemento.

and while coming out they litterally jump out from the concrete pavement.

Non da meno è l’approccio a questa curva: quinta piena, giù tre marce

And the approach to this corner is quite spectacular too: 5th gear, downshift to 2nd

e buttarsi dentro appena inizia la pendenza per percorrere la curva a velocità costante!

and throw the car inside as soon as the slope starts to do the bend at a constant speed!

Intanto in pit lane il lavoro è sempre più frenetico. Ormai mancano poche ore e ogni errore si paga caro.

Meanwhile on the pit lane the work is more and more hectic. Now there are just a few hours left and you pay dearly every mistake.

La tensione è ben visibile sui volti dei piloti.

The tension is painted on the driver’s faces.

L’Aston Martin Rapide a idrogeno sta per completare con successo la 24h dopo innumerevoli soste, dato che l’autonomia della macchina era di un giro soltanto.

The hydrogen powered Aston Martin Rapide is about to successfully complete the 24h after countless stops, since the “fuel range” of the car was of just one lap.

La pista sembra essersi in parte svuotata dopo i ritiri di diversi team

The race track sometimes seems to be empty after all the retirements

ma nonostante tutto la concentrazione è sempre altissima, visto che ci sono ancora battaglie per la top 10 in atto.

but despite this the concentration was always at the top, since some battles for the top 10 positions were still going on.

Gas sempre aperto e guida aggressiva sono due cose che non possono mancare proprio sul finire.

Going always full throttle and aggressive driving are two things that can’t be missed in the final stages.

Chiunque riesca a finire la gara ha la sua dose di gloria.

Everyone who will be able to finish the race have its own dose of glory.

Da un certo punto di vista è come se non esistessero vinti o vincitori.

From a certain point of view it’s like if there are no winner and losers.

Tutti possono finalmente festeggiare,

ma quest’anno chi fa festa più di tutti quanti è il team Black Falcon, piazzando al pirmo posto la Mercedes SLS GT3 #9 guidata da Schneider, Bleekemolen, Edwards e Thiim e regalando così alla Mercedes la prima vittoria in assoluto in questa massacrante gara di durata.

but this year who celebrate more than anyone else is the Black Falcon team, placing on the first step of the podium the Mercedes SLS GT3 #9 driven by Schneider, Bleekemolen, Edwards and Thiim and giving to Mercedes its first victory in this exhausting endurance race.

Subito dietro, dopo un incredibile show sotto la pioggia del pilota Belga Maxime Martin, la BMW Z4 GT3 #25 del team MarcVDS con Martin, Piccini, Buurman e Göransson al volante di questa splendida macchina.

Just behind them, after an incredible show under the rain from the Belgian driver Maxime Martin, the BMW Z4 GT3 #25 of the MarcVDS racing team with Martin, Piccini, Buurman and Göransson at the wheel of this beautiful car.

L’ultimo gradino del podio se lo sono invece aggiudicati Graf, Jäger, Seyffarth e Bastian su un’altra Mercedes SLS GT3, questa volta del team ROWE Racing.

While on the last step of the podium Graf, Jäger, Seyffarth and Bastian on another Mercedes SLS GT3, but this time of the ROWE Racing team.

Ed è così, con un mix di gioia e stanchezza e con la consapevolezza che il giorno successivo saremmo dovuti rientrare in Italia, che la nostra 24h del Nurburgring volge al termine.

And so it is, with a mix of joy and tiredness and with the awareness that the next day we needed to go back to Italy, that our Nurburgring 24h race was over.

L’esperienza è stata una delle più intense della nostra vita, il luogo è semplicemente magico, la gara che si svolge sulle tortuose strade che attraversano i monti dell’Eifel è a dir poco coinvolgente e per essere stata la nostra prima volta al mitico Nordschleife, ci riteniamo fortunati e soddisfatti per tutto ciò che abbiamo vissuto e che abbiamo fatto.

The experience has been one of the most intense of our lives, the place is simply magical, the race which takes place on the winding roads that goes through the Eifel mountains is nothing short of addictive and as our first time visiting the mighty Nordshleife, we consider ourself lucky and satisfied for everything we have experienced and for what we have done.

Ormai siamo gravemente malati di febbre da Green Hell ed ogni giorno ci ritroviamo a parlare di qualche aneddoto accaduto in quella settimana.

By this time we are seriously ill with the Green Hell fever and every day we still talk about something happened during that week.

Ci mancherà di sicuro e l’attesa di un anno intero, nella speranza di poter tornare, sarà interminabile.

We will miss it a lot and waiting an entire new year, with the hope to be able to go back again, will be endless.
