Quando metti insieme un gruppo di amici “nostalgici” ed appassionati, amanti dei fondi scivolosi e delle prove speciali più belle della Valle d’Aosta, accadono cose che un vero fanatico di motori non può perdere.

When you put together a bunch of “nostalgic” and passionate friends, that love the slippery surfaces and the best Special Stages of the Valle d’Aosta, some things happen and a true petrolhead can’t miss’em.

La neve è caduta abbondante è lo scenario è dei più suggestivi. Già in viaggio per raggiungere il paese di Morgex si vedevano le montagne innevate e il paesaggio delle Alpi italiane ti lascia senza fiato. Arrivati a destinazione cerchiamo di capire il percorso che le auto avrebbero fatto, visto che purtroppo le PS non erano elencate da nessuna parte. Sapevamo solo che il Rally Neige Revival si sarebbe svolto nella valle di Valdigne.

A lot of snow has fallen and the scenario is one of the most suggestive. Yet during our travel to arrive in Morgex you could see the snow covered mountains and the scenery of the italian Alps leaves you breathless. Arrived at destination we try to find out the route that the cars would have done, since, unfortunately, the SS were not listed anywhere. We just knew that the Rally Neige Revival would took place in the Valdigne valley.

Essendo una manifestazione non competitiva (più un raduno di amici e di persone che si vogliono divertire sulla neve) l’organizzazione per chi come noi non partecipava attivamente era abbastanza complicata. Nonostante tutto arriviamo alla prima PS, dove vediamo alcune auto passare in mezzo a un paese e salire per una strada stretta e scivolosa. Erano presenti grandi classici del rallysmo come questa stupenda Lancia Fulvia HF “Fanalone”,

Being a not competitive event (more a gathering of friends and people that want to have some fun on the snow) the organization for those of us who did not actively participate was quite complicated. Despite everything, we arrived at the first SS, where we see some cars passing in the middle of a small town and climb up a narrow and slippery country road. There were some great rallying classics like this wonderful Lancia Fulvia HF “Fanalone”,

Ci spostiamo verso la prossima prova e nel mentre incrociamo qualche altra auto. E che auto! Il 5 cilindri Audi suona che è un piacere e l’immagine di una Quattro sulla neve riporta alla memoria le grandi imprese delle Gruppo B.

We move to the next stage and in the meantime we meet some other cars. And what cars! The 5 pots Audi sounds incredible and the image of a Quattro on the snow brings back to memory the great challenges of the Group B rally cars.

Arriviamo sul Colle San Carlo… che strada stupenda e spettacolare… trovarsi in mezzo al bosco, con il buio che cala e la neve che cade dagli alberi è semplicemente stupendo. Al passaggio delle auto il colle si anima, le sentiamo arrivare e improvvisamente i fari illuminano lo scenario.

We arrived at the Colle San Carlo… what a beautiful and spectacular road… being in the middle of a forest, with the darkness dropping and the snow falling from the trees is just tremendous. With the passage of the cars the mountain comes alive, we hear them and suddenly the headlights enlighten the scenario.

Le auto a trazione integrale hanno decisamente un altro passo e salgono rabbiose, sollevando ondate di neve e sparendo velocemente dietro le curve.

The all wheel drive cars have definitely another pace and climb the road ferociously, raising loads of snow and quickly disappearing behind the bends.

Le altre si sono affidate alle abilità e all’audacia dei piloti e, nonostante alcuni avessere veramente grossi problemi di trazione, si sono comunque visti bei traversi e passaggi mozzafiato.

The others have relied to the skills and bravery of the drivers and, despite someone was having big traction issues, there have been some beautiful drifts and breathtaking passages.

Anche se i concorrenti erano pochi, la varietà delle auto era… curiosa… c’era persino un Porsche 914!

Even if the competitors were just a few, the variety of the cars was… well, curious… there was even a Porsche 914!

Salendo in cima al colle per l’ultima PS serale la neve comincia a fioccare, il vento si alza e la strada diventa sempre più bianca. Ci appostiamo a bordo strada con i fari accesi a illuminare il buio totale. Dopo un po’ di attesa, il suono delle prime auto rompe il silenzio della montagna. Curva stretta a destra, uscita di traverso e fiammata che illumina per un istante la strada. Brividi veri, emozioni d’altri tempi nel vedere una Opel Manta guidata in quella maniera.

Going up on the top of the hill for the last nightly SS the snow starts to fall, the wind gets up and the street become more and more white. We move next to the road with the headlights turned on, enlighting the complete darkness. After a small waiting, the sound of the first cars brakes the silence of the mountain. Tight right hander, sideways exit and flame that enlighten the street for a moment. Real thrill, old school emotions while looking an Opel Manta driven that hard.

Vedere le luci che dopo poco lasciano di nuovo spazio alla notte è un’altra di quelle scene che rimarranno sicuramente nelle nostre menti.

To see the lights that after just a few moments leave again the place to the darkenss of the night is another one of those experiences that will remain for sure in our minds.

Alcuni piloti hanno proabilmente avuto qualche incontro ravvicinato con qualche cumulo di neve a bordo strada, ma nonostante tutto anche la piccola A112 si è fatta strada sul tortuoso percorso innevato.

Some drivers have probably had a close encounter with some snow heaps on the side of the road, but despite everything the small A112 has made its way on the winding path covered with snow.

Con le dita dei piedi che iniziavano a congelarsi e la neve che continuava a scendere abbondante, ci siamo goduti gli ultimi passaggi mozzafiato.

With the toes began to freeze and the snow that was still falling, we enjoyed the last breathtaking passages.

A fine giornata solo un paio di domande sono rimaste senza risposta. Per quale motivo non esistono rally come questo in Italia? Perchè ormai è così difficile trovare PS su neve con auto di ogni genere e ruote chiodate? I rally moderni hanno perso gran parte del loro fascino e sarebbe stupendo avere di nuovo indietro un po’ di quella passione che univa piloti, team e pubblico in quel grande spettacolo che erano i rally invernali della vecchia scuola.

At the end of the day only a couple of questions have remained without answer. Why on earth there are no rallies like this one in Italy? Why by now it’s so hard to find SS on snow with cars of every kind and studded tires? Modern rallies have lost a lot of their charm and it would be great to have back again some of that passion that used to join drivers, teams and public in that great show that were the old school winter rallies.
